Bringing services closer to the people is what Kampala International University is doing in western Uganda. The university has a state-of -art teaching hospital in Bushenyi. The first phase of the teaching hospital was opened on December 28 last year by President Yoweri Museveni. The hospital houses the Department of Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gyneacology, Pediatric, OPD and casualty. Magnificent storeyed structures welcome you to this university that is hardly a year old. They are surrounded by a serene environment and lush lawns. Background KIU started operations in 2001 with its main campus in Kampala in 2004. Later, management decided to have another campus in western Uganda to house the School of Health Sciences for training medical doctors, clinical officers, nurses and pharmacists. The university acquired 100 hectares of land in Ishaka for this cause. Modern facilities, well equipped laboratories and lecture rooms are some of the facilities this university boasts of. The teaching staff consists of lecturers from Nigeria, Egypt, Philipines, Kenya and Uganda. The western campus started operations in 2004 with 404 students studying health science. The campus is science-based although demands by the community saw the introduction of Bachelor and Diploma in Education for Secondary and Grade Five teachers. The university has no international twinning arrangements at the moment. Each hostel accommodates 124 students. The university also encourages students to cater for their accommodation. All private hostels are registered with the dean of students. Sports/recreational facilities There is a football field, volleyball and netball pitches. There is also a pool table, table tennis room and TV room. Lecture/student ratio 1:7 but expected to change in five years.There are 90 permanent lecturers, 25 of whom are PhD holders 40 are Masters holders and others hold Bachelors degrees. Address P. O.
