AFRICAN LINK TOURS AND SAFARIS LTD

We formed this safari company in order to help support our orphanagein Kenya.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Maddy Robertson and for 12 years I have lived at the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia and I would like to share my recent journey with you.

Last December my husband Allan and I visited Mombasa, Kenya in order to visit a little girl who we have been sponsoring for 8 years.

Whilst we were out and about experiencing the local people and visiting their homes a plan started to form in my mind. My plan was to open an orphanage in order to save the lives of some of the street children of Mombasa.

There are over 1.4 million orphans in Kenya and in Mombasa alone it is estimated that there are over 30,000 orphans living on the streets and in the slums. There is no one to care for them, no one to feed them or offer them the simple things in life that we take for granted. The necessities like food clothing, shelter, health, education, love, affection or even a simple smile. No one cares and this leaves them open to predators.

It broke our hearts to see them beg for food. To see a 10 year old girl carrying her baby brother on her hip as she searched for a morsel of food from a garbage bin to stop him from crying. They had no shoes and only the clothes on their backs.

At first I planned on donating $30,000 to get our orphanage started but soon realized that it would not stretch far enough. So instead I decided to start a safari company and generate an income to help support the home. So that is exactly what we did.

We donated 48% of the company to a local man from Mombasa who was our driver/guide on safari. Mike will be the driver/guide of the safari company and 48% of the profits will be his. The remaining 52% is ours and all of the profits will help maintain the home. So with every safari booked with us means you are helping support these kids.

It has been a long year for us but a rewarding one as well. In order to fundraise we operate here in Australia under the umbrella of Hopewell Hospice at the Gold Coast. We are the Kenya Division of Paradise Kids for Africa. All donations are tax deductable.
