Location

Bukedea is bordered by Katakwi District to the north, Sironko District to the east, Mbale District to the southeast, Budaka to the south and Kumi District to the west. The district headquarters at Bukedea are located approximately 79 kilometres (49 mi), by road, southeast of Soroti, the largest city in the sub-region. The coordinates of the district are:01 21N, 34 03E.

Overview

Bukedea was created by Act of the Ugandan Parliament, in 2006 and became operational on 1 July 2007. Prior to that the district was part of Kumi District. Bukedea, together with Amuria District, Kaberamaido District, Katakwi District, Kumi District and Soroti District is part of the Teso sub-region, home to an estimated 2.5 million people of Iteso and Kumam ethnicities.

Population

The national census in 2002 estimated the population of the district at 122,527. The annual population growth rate in the district is 3.3%. Using those statistics, it is estimated that the population of Bukedea in 2009 is approximately 153,792.

Economic activities

Subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry are the two main economic activities in the district. Crops grown include
