Busitema Agriculture research institute turned a University, which was founded by the Government, is a living testimony of what the Soviet Union did for the third world in terms of development. In 1968, after its completion with assistance from the Russians, the institute started as an agricultural training centre.

Location It is found in Tororo town on the Iganga-Tororo highway. The university has other campuses in Jinja, Nagongera, Mbale, Kaliro, Pallisa and Arapai. Elisha Obella, the academic registrar, says this is their first intake. Enrollment 160 students and 20 teaching staff. Courses offered • Bachelor of computer engineering (four years) • Bachelor of agricultural mechanisation and irrigation engineering (four years) • Bachelor of Science in education (three years). • Diploma in ginning • Diploma in agricultural engineering. The university is in the process of setting up a library and numerous volumes of books have been obtained electronically from other institutions. Computer facilities There are 70 computers, but the Internet connectivity does not reach the required level for such an establishment. Busitema has links with Walter Sisulu University in South Africa and the Communications University in China. Logistics Government sponsored students are given sh120,000 every month to cater for accommodation, transport and feeding. Recreational facilities Movies, football, netball and athletics.
