Lacam is the perfect name for this beautiful lodge. It sits only a short hop away from the very top of the falls, facing north with a view over the Sipi Valley and the plains of Kapchorwa. Compare Mt Elgon Lodge with Other Luxury Lodges in Uganda

Visitors to the lodge have the choice of three very large, self-contained bandas – each with one double and one single bed, dorm-style rooms or tent camping. Please don't Leave this page without reading about other best Safari Lodges in Uganda
The spacious bandas, constructed with bamboo and raw wood, each have a full wall of windows facing the valley and falls, as well as a small porch with seats to take in the day’s fresh air.
Showers in the bandas have clever screened windows at eye level, allowing the bather to avoid missing a minute of the excellent view. The water is heated and its temperature regulated to a precise level all day, resulting in some of the best showers I have ever taken. Each bed is also extremely comfortable, providing a superb night’s rest.
There is no electricity at Lacam, which turned out to be an excellent surprise.
The rumble of generators did not spoil the ambient sounds created by the waterfall and songbirdsClick here for more information about birding vacation in Uganda, the sound of my mobile phone didn’t remind me of any waiting obligations! Besides, the lodge is well lit by lanterns as well as a warm, blazing fire during the night.
In addition, Lacam’s chef is truly a master of his art. Each meal, whether eaten on the wide deck in the sun or under the restaurant’s roof, was a culinary treat. Much of the food served is local, including mouth-watering guacamole and spinach. Click here for more information about Ugandan food species
Dinner always began with a fabulous soup: chicken soup with rosemary was my favourite. We also got to enjoy desserts like banana crepes and buttermilk cake, which was the best slice of cake I have ever had in Ugandan hotels. I also fell in love with everyone who works at Lacam Lodge. They took excellent care of my friend and I, from guiding us through the falls walk to helping us fix our mischievous car.
On top of that, they have a deep understanding of Sipi and its local culture: many of them are Sabiny, the tribe inhabiting the area. Click here for more information about the culture of Uganda tribes
We discovered so many interesting facts about Sipi; its fluctuation between rainy and dry seasons and which type of coffee grows best on the cliffs.Speaking of coffee, some of the world’s finest Arabica is grown in Uganda on Mount Elgon and in Sipi Falls – in the foothills of Elgon. It is this coffee, of course, that is roasted, ground and served at Lacam. As someone who truly loves and understands this famous bean, I must say that Lacam’s coffee is the freshest, smoothest coffee I have ever had.
Other Attractions
Lacam Lodge is not, by any means, the only attraction at Sipi Falls. There is a scenic walk down the cliff to the bottom of the waterfall, up again into caves and past Sipi’s two smaller cataracts. Read about other places that you should not miss on nature and forest walk in Uganda
I absolutely love this 2-hour walk. It takes the hiker through small farms, past coffee and banana trees, meeting friendly and amused villagers along the way. The pool at the bottom of the falls is like something from a science fiction movie. It is misty, flowered and mossy, and cool air from the water blows refreshingly up to the path.
Caves
Our guide took us into the caves beside the waterfall, which are full of small bats and crystal deposits built up over many years. Sweeping the torch around the inside of the cave, we watched the bats fly about excitedly amidst tiny glimmers of white, orange and red crystals.
It must be noted that the hike is quite thorough exercise, but it can be done by nearly anyone. I did it with a broken toe; children and grandmothers do it a few times daily with huge bunches of matooke and firewood on their heads!
More walks into Sipi’s forests begin from a Forest Centre a few kilometres down the road from Lacam. These walks are less intense than the waterfall hike and can take between 1 and 7 hours, depending on the distance.
Forest walks provide a chance to view more than 350 different species of birds, the grey monkey and a spectacular bamboo forest. Click here for more information about wildlife in Uganda
For the more adventurous traveller, climbing sports are available simply by telling the manager you are interested. I had my first abseiling experience beside the falls, from about 100 metres into the air. Although the first step or two was terrifying, the rush of abseiling, essentially swinging down through the view of the falls, forest and cliffs, was something I would like to repeat again very soon!Do you like adventure?,don't miss Uganda's favourite bungee jumping on the source of River Nile
The experience was improved by watching Lacam’s manager, Timothy, and our guide, Martin, swing down for their first times as well!
Rock climbing is also popular at Sipi Falls. Climbs are as short as 10 metres or as long as 30, with difficulty levels ranging from beginner to expert.
The most difficult climb, C&C Muscle Factory, includes climbing across a large overhang. Don’t worry, lessons are available for anyone who wants to try, the ropes are strong and your safety is assured!
I heartily recommend taking advantage of some, if not all, of Sipi’s fantastic activities. Spend a few days there, enjoying the day’s warmth and the cool nights, adventuring in the morning and relaxing during the evenings. Lacam wraps all of these possibilities into one exciting package, with its staff thoughtfully helping you choose how to best enjoy the lodge and beautiful Sipi Falls.
The Sabiny people
The Sabiny people, living in and around Sipi, most likely migrated there from Kenya hundreds of years ago.
They have held on to their traditions, fighting to keep the Bagisu out of their territory and maintaining strong ties to the land and their livestock. The drive to Sipi provides an excellent slice of culture: traditional mud homes painted with geometric patterns, cattle eating from well-designed troughs and small farms pepper the road.
The Sabiny, along with the Bagisu, are the only peoples in Uganda who still practice the old tradition of circumcision. Ceremonies are carried out in August and December, depending on each clan’s decision. The Ugandan government has outlawed female circumcision, but male circumcision is still a must in Sabiny society.Click to learn why the Bagishu of eastern Uganda practice traditional circumcision
Boys aged 16 to 24 are considered the proper age, and won’t be thought of as full men until their ceremony is complete. Men are very proud of their circumcision. Visitors are more than welcome to observe the ceremonies, which involve singing, dancing and public displays of bravery by the young men. Don’t be afraid to ask your Sabiny guides about the practice
