This was like the penthouse of tents! A huge queen-size bed, a day bed, trunks to keep our clothes in and a fantastic bathroom. 'Karibu', Swahili for welcome, was written on our bed in flowers. Just wonderful. Our balcony over looked the lake, hence the crocodiles.Lunch was fab. Three courses over-looking the hippos in the lake. The food was good and the wine was very reasonably priced and also very good. With service and food so good it was hard to believe we were in the middle of a National Park but the noisy hippos kept giving us a little reminder!
When we returned from our evening game drive we had to let the team know what time we wanted to be picked up for dinner so that someone could walk with us.
We were collected for dinner with 2 golf umbrellas as the thunder had been rumbling for about an hour but the rain held off.
Our guide showed us the Gazelles that sleep close to the hotel because they think it is safe and a couple of Bush Babies in the trees as we walked to the restaurant.Dinner was fantastic. We enjoyed a seven-course feast and some more delightful wine served on fine china and crystal. The restaurant is decorated with photos of Karen Blixen and Finch Hatton. The staff are fantastic and could not do enough to help you. We were escorted back to our tent in time for lights out, 11.30!
This is because Finch Hattons Camp Tsavo West National is run on generators and they are switched off around 11.30. The tent did not have a fan but we did not miss it. The tent had mosquito net sides so we kept them down all night and it was lovely and cool.
The Finch Hattons Camp Tsavo West National hotel arranged for us to have breakfast earlier than normal so we could make an early start. As were were up so early we were lucky enough to see the hippos making their way back into the water. A huge choice for breakfast for such a small lodge, lots of fruit and cereals and a good selection of hot food.
It was such a shame that we were only at the lodge for one night and did not have time to make full use of the facilities, pool, library etc.An absolutely amazing place.
The food is unbelievable. What a great excuse to get dressed for dinner. Crystal glasses, silverware and silver service waiting. All this followed by coffee in the leather chesterfield strewn library/study/sitting room.
I really can't praise Finch Hattons Camp Tsavo West National enough. The game drives are in a part of Tsavo I hadn't previously experienced and it's a very lovely area. Full of elephant, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, leopard and many others, including the elusive Klipspringer! Upon return to our tent, we were treated to the sound and vision of two baby hippos busily munching away - I could have watched them all night long.
Looking back over my travel journal, my last thoughts on Finch Hattons were "Fabulous food, fabulous surroundings, fabulous people and fabulous lodgings. I really, really want to return and I will, believe me, I will....."
