Location of Ibanda
Ibanda is bordered by Kamwenge District to the northwest and north, Kiruhura District to the east, Mbarara District to the south and Bushenyi District to the southwest. The district headquarters at Ibanda are located a;proximately 71 kilometres (44 mi), by road, northwest of Mbarara, the largest city in the sub-region. The coordinates of the district are:-00 07S, 30 30E.
Overview of Ibanda
Ibanda was created on 1 July 2005, by elevating Ibanda County, formerly part of Mbarara District, to full district status. It consists of sub-counties of Nyabuhikye, Bisheshe, Kichenche, Rukiri, Nyamarebe, Ishongorero and Ibanda Town Council. The district covers 967 square kilometres (373 sq mi) and averages an elevation of approximately 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) above sea level. The average annual rainfall in the district averages 1,100 millimetres (43 in).
Ibanda, the seat of the district headquarters, is connected to the National Electricity Grid with a sub-station 4 miles (6.4 km) outside Mbarara town. A tarmac road connects via Mbarara to the capital Kampala.
There is one major hospital, Ibanda Hospital, administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mbarara. The hospital has an affiliated school for enrolled midwives and nurses.
Population of Ibanda
The 2002 national census estimated the population of Ibanda District at 198,043. The population of the district has an estimated annual growth rate of 3.0%. Using those statistics, it is estimated that the population of Ibanda in 2009 is approximately 243,568.
Economic activities in Ibanda
As with most Ugandan districts, agriculture forms the backbone of the economy of Ibanda District. Most of the agriculture is on the subsistence level. The largest farm in the district is the Kiburara Prison Farm, located at Kiburara Prison. The crops grown in the district include:
•Coffee
•Bananas
•Matooke
•Beans
•Maize
•Groundnuts
Livestock is kept in many areas of the district including cattle, goats, sheep and poultry
