Iganga is a district in eastern Uganda. Like most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Iganga, where the district headquarters are located.

Location

Iganga is bordered by Kaliro District to the north, Namutumba District to the northeast, Bugiri District to the east, Mayuge District to the southeast, Jinja District to the southwest and Kamuli District to the west. The district headquarters at Iganga are located approximately 43 kilometres (27 mi), by road, east of Jinja, the largest city in the sub-region. The coordinates of the district are: 00 38N, 33 29E (Latitude: 0.6350; Longitude: 33.4850).

Overview

The district is situated in southeastern Uganda, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the north of Lake Victoria. Iganga District lies at an altitude of about 1,138 metres (3,730 ft) above sea level and just north of the Equator. The district is bisected by the main highway through East Africa from Kenya to the Ugandan capital Kampala and the Central African states of Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Population

The 2002 national census estimated the population of the district at 547,155. The annual population growth rate in the district is estimated at 2.8%. Given those statistics, it is estimated that the population f the district in 2009 is approximately 663,839.

Language

Iganga lies within the Busoga tribal region, with the traditional Lusoga language still extensively used. Lusoga is a language very closely related to Luganda, which is widely used in the capital region and in the media.

Economy

Iganga is a rural district, and the chief town is not a tourist destination yet as is Jinja 43 kilometres (27 mi) to the west. The majority of people in Iganga District are subsistence farmers. The surplus finds ready market locally in the urban areas and in area markets. The main crops grown in the district include:
