Background Kabale University was inaugurated in 2001 to serve the people of Kigezi comprising the current districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro and Rukungiri. The university is licensed and gazetted by the National Council of Higher Education. It has embarked on academic programmes that respond to the needs of the region. Courses offered include environmental sciences, land use management, Languages, development studies, and science and technology. Location The university is located on Kikungiri Hill, one kilometre off the Katuna-Kigali highway in Kabale Municipality. Land The university owns 52 hectares of land donated by the Kabale district local government. About 50 hectares are located at the Kikungiri Hill. In addition, 400 acres of rural land located in Kanungu district was offered to the university by James Musinguzi. Infrastructure The university owns over 30 buildings. It has also installed telephone lines and has internet access. An airstrip is located within vicinity of the campus in Kisoro, which is 80kms from Kabale town. The university inherited a local government residential and administrative site, including a former hostel and training building and council halls. Some of the units have been renovated and adapted to teaching and learning environment. Others are being renovated to suit university service delivery. At the moment, there is more infrastructure than the current student population can utilise. Library facilities The library was renovated with funds from the Mukombe family. It has 13,845 books. Plans are underway to re-enforce the stock of books with most recent publications. Strategic plan The main objective of the university is to contribute to the socio-economic development of Kigezi and the Great Lakes regions through accessible training, research, decentralised service delivery using participatory and inclusive approaches and methodologies.
