Kaliro is a district in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It was created out of the eastern part of Kamuli District in 2006, and is now a fully fledged district. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Kaliro.

Location

Kaliro borders Kamuli District in the west, from which it was split. In the north, the district borders Soroti District, across Lake Nakuwa, part of the lakes that comprise the Lake Kyoga water complex. Pallisa District lies to the northeast. Iganga District lies to the southeast and to the south.

Administratively the district has one county with five (5) sub-counties and one municipality, Kaliro, the district headquarters. The total surface area of Kaliro District is 904 square kilometres (349 sq mi), of which 710 square kilometres (270 sq mi) (78.5%) is arable land.

Demographics

The 2002 Uganda National Census put the population in the district at 153,513 of whom 76,002 (49.5%) were males and 77,511(50.5%) were females. The annual population growth rate in the district was estimated at 5.1%.

Using those statistics, it is estimated that in 2009, the population in the district has risen to 217,453 people (107,639 males) and (109,814 females). The Basoga are the main inhabitants of the district, and the dominant local language is Lusoga.Click here for more information about Basoga People and their culture in Uganda
