Kipungani is a fantastic hideaway where you can escape from the trappings of modern life. Just a short flight from Nairobi and a 30 min boat ride from the airstrip at Manda ("Manda International Airport"!!!) and you are transported to a place where time stands still. There is very little to do apart from chill out by the pool, play games, read, take a trip to the local village (where many of the staff come from and live) and meet the pupils at the local school.
You arrive at this property after a pleasant 30 minute boat ride (outboard, seats 6). Staff are on the beach to greet you and take your bags and shoes as it's a sandy beach landing. It's hard to describe the rooms or "bandas" but none of the pictures I've seen on-line do it justice.
The bandas are very large and made entirely of local materials including palm fronds and wood - there are even giant clam shells at the front "patio" that serve as foot baths. There are no windows or doors, yet they are very private, and all have good flushing toilets and showers. Staff are warm and helpful and the food selection, though somewhat limited, is good. There are only 13 bandas so it is never busy and there is very little to do.
