Their mission is to respond to societal and educational needs by developing and delivering academic programmes that are responsive to the market place. It is located in Kansanga, a Kampala suburb, three kilometres from the city centre.
Accommodation
Students stay in hostels outside the campus. The owners of these hostels are directly answerable to the university and their accommodation facilities must meet the set university standards.Afforbable meals are provided by canteens within the university. A Students’ Union canteen also exists. However, students are free to make private eating arrangements with various catering services in the neighbourhood.
The university operates a 24-hour clinic on the campus to cater for minor or emergency health problems of staff and students. There is a standby ambulance for serious cases, which are referred to Kibuli Hospital. The university also offers medical insurance for international students.
KIU FM (107.5)
The university operates a radio station at the main campus. The station was established in 2004 to offer hands-on-experience to students pursuing degrees in Mass Communication. Facilities to enable broadcasting in central, western and eastern Uganda have been installed.
Current enrollment
It is home to over 3,000 students with the majority Kenyan. There are 30 lecture rooms with a sitting capacity of 45 students each. There is also a library with a sitting capacity of 200 students.
The university operates under a provisional licence issued by National Council of Higher Education and sits on 20 acres of land.
Masters programmes take one-two years while under graduate-degree programmes take three years. However, Bachelor of Laws takes four years. Diploma programmes take one-two years and certificate programmes take between two weeks and six months.
Entry requirements
Applicants who passed through O’ and A’level need two principal passes in relevant subjects and a subsidiary diploma from a recognised institution of higher learning. Students who hold Kenya Certificate of Education and wish to enroll for a degree or diploma have to undergo Access program. Such students require a minimum mean grade of C to qualify for the Access Program.
For diploma programmes one principal pass and 2 subsidiaries or a certificate from a recognised tertiary institution is the requirement. KIU has four schools and five faculties offering certificate, diploma, degree, post-graduate diplomas and masters programmes.

The university offers two scholarships for every district in the country
Sports scholarships
Male and female students who have a record of being excellent in sport. Fifteen scholarships are given out every year in this discipline.
Board of Trustees scholarship
This scholarship is an initiative of the Chairperson Board of Trustees
Academic Excellence
Students who have excelled academically in their undergraduate programmes and have emerged with 1st class or 2nd upper are offered bursaries to upgrade their education at KIU. These students while pursuing their Master programme are also recruited as teaching assistant.
