Location in Koboko
Koboko is bordered by Southern Sudan to the north, Yumbe District to the east, Maracha-Terego District to the south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The district headquarters at Koboko are located approximately 55 kilometres (34 mi), by road, north of Arua, the largest city in the sub-region. The coordinates of the district are:03 25N, 30 58E.
Overview of Koboko
Koboko was established on July 1, 2005 by the Ugandan Parliament. Before that it was part of Arua District. Koboko District comprises of one county, five (5) Sub-counties (LC3's), forty three (43) parishes (LC2's) and three hundred and two (302) villages (LC1s). The district has one Urban Council namely, Koboko Town Council.
Koboko comprises mainly of flat rolling plains between 3,160 feet (960 m) and 5,283 feet (1,610 m), above sea level. There are isolated undulating hills mainly in the northern and western parts of the district. The district covers a total land area of 820.8 square kilometres (316.9 sq mi), of which about 12% is forest. Over 88% of the land is arable and suitable for agriculture.
Population of Koboko
The 2002 national census estimated the population of Koboko at 129,200 of whom 65,400 (50.6%) were females and 63,800 (49.4%) were males. The annual population growth rate of the district was estimated at 5.6% in 2002. Using those statistics, it is estimated that the population of Koboko District in 2009 is approximately 189,196.:
Economic activities in Koboko
Like in most Ugandan districts, subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry are the main economic activities in the district. The crops grown include:
•Maize
•Millet
•Sweet potatoes
•Cassava
Livestock raised in the district includes cattle, goats, sheep and poultry.
