Location of Kyambogo University UgandaLocated 8kms from Kampala City Centre along Kampala-Jinja highway, the university is accessible through the Banda trading centre and the Kyambogo T-junction.UPK evolved from a small technical school in 1928 before it was renamed Uganda Technical College and finally Uganda Polytechnic, Kyambogo.
ITEK started as a Government Teacher Training College in 1948 at Nyakasura. In 1954, it transferred to Kyambogo Hill as a National Teachers’ College and later became ITEK by Statute of Parliament in 1989.
UNISE was a Department of Special Education in the Faculty of Education. Later became an autonomous institution by Act of Parliament in 1998.
The university is focused on vocationalising education at all levels and it believes in the philosophy that knowledge is as important as skills. The university has embraced the fields of science, technology, education and special needs and community rehabilitation as its core areas of training and research.
In a bid to maintain its standards, Kyambogo University has scaled down its enrolment this academic year. The university is, however, expanding its facilities and is currently a beehive of activity with several buildings being erected on the vast campus. The fresh look, coupled with the serene environment gives Kyambogo a modern air.
According to the acting Vice Chancellor, the university will continue to identify and develop new programmes geared at national development in spite of the ceiling on its overall enrolment. He also notes that the university has, in line with the objectives spelt out in its strategic plan, allocated sh150m towards research.
Located 8Kms from Kampala city centre on the Kampala-Jinja highway, Kyambogo University (KYU) is Uganda’s third public university established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001. It was formed after the merger of Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK) and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
