While at Lake Country Club Hotel Naivasha ,it was like going back in time to the British colonial period. Beautifully kept gardens and beautifully manicured lawns. Granted some of the things here seem dated, but they fit the setting. If it weren't for the signs warning of wild animals wandering the grounds after sunset, this hotel could be in the best.

I was there to see the local animals and my friends and I weren't disappointed. We went for an early evening boat ride to see hippos and we saw about 6 fairly close up.

My friends got up early enough the next morning to take the walkway from the hotel toward their dock to see the hippos returning to the lake after feeding all night.

We went for a boat ride around the lake and saw hippos, water fowl in vast numbers and on Crescent Island there were Giraffes. Just before dark we saw waterbuck grazing on the lawn. The food was very good and staff very accommodating.

Just over an hour's drive from Nairobi. The hotel is close to the lake shores, situated in 55 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. We stayed in a small chalet in amongst the trees.

Food at the hotel was in the standard buffet style and the chef had gone to extra lengths to present the food well. For one of the lunches he had made a cake in the shape of a Crocodile!

From the top of the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley you can see Lake Naivasha sparkling in the sun thousands of feet below. Lake Naivasha.

Country Club became famous in the 1930's as a staging post for Imperial Airways flying boat service from Durban to London.

The Old Colonial architecture is solid and comfortable with accommodation in rooms and cottages set in 12 hectares of green lawns shaded by mature acacias and spreading fever trees. Lake Naivasha Country Clubs public rooms are elegant and cool.

The residents' lounge has a massive fireplace and large bay windows. The bar is cosy and adjoins an immaculately equipped snooker. Lake Naivasha is the focus of activity.

There's good fishing for black bass and tilapia and a boat trip during the day is recommended for a close up of Naivasha's remarkable variety of birdlife and its hippo colonies.

The highest of the Rift Valley lakes, Naivasha lies at about 1880 m. The lake level varies quite considerably - in 1926 it was reported 6 m higher. Years ago, it was a great deal higher than that and its waters gushed through Njorowa Gorge now high above the lake and the dramatic entrance to Hell's Gate National Park.

The lake region is renowned worldwide for the numerous species of birds found in the area. 400 species have been listed in the Lake Baringo area and the Goliath Heron on a rocky islet in the lake (known locally as Gibraltar) is world famous. Lake Naivasha's main attraction is the prolific bird life.

Many species including fish eating birds such as pelicans, herons, storks and kingfishers are resident throughout the year. However if there is one bird which characterizes Lake Naivasha, it would have to be the African Fish Eagle.

Lake Naivasha Country Club opened in 1937 as a staging post for Imperial Airways' flying boat service from Durban to London. The 55-acre property boasts green lawns shaded by mature acacias and spreading fever trees that stretch down to the lake's shore.

The Lake Country Club Hotel Naivasha offers a wonderful mix of tranquility in serene surroundings and a varied number of sporting activities for both the energetic and the more laid back.

Lake Naivasha is the focus of activity but the abundant birdlife and several activities in the area mean there is never a shortage of things to do.
