Lake Victoria Uganda

General Description of Lake Victoria in Uganda

Lake Victoria Uganda supports more than a million people in Uganda. Its economic activities ranges from fishing to tourist attraction. Its a 3rd largest lake in the whole world and the largest in Africa. On this page we will give you the details.

Lake Victoria Uganda is the page you must read before you visit the lake itself. The largest of all African Lakes and the thi4rd in the whole world Its extensive surface belongs to the three countries; the northern half to Uganda, the southern half to Tanzania, and part of the northeastern sector to Kenya. It is bigger than Rwanda and Burundi combined. It is near the main capital city of Uganda.

The Lake Victoria Uganda occupies a wide depression near the equator, between the East and West Great Rift Valleys which was caused by upwarping of western Uganda to form Mountain Rwenzori ranges and downwarping to form a depression and turning of rivers from going westwards to Congo, but its drainage basin is relatively small, being slightly less than three times the lake's surface in area.

The lake water is drained at a rate of about 600 m3 sec-1, at Jinja on the northern shore, into the Victoria Nile which flows northward via Lake Albert and the White Nile forming the uppermost reaches of the Nile River. The lake shore is highly indented, and there are many islands in the lake, some of which, especially the Sesse Group, are known for their beautiful landscape, health resorts and sightseeing places.

Abundant prehistoric remains found around the lake indicate the early development of agriculture. There are a number of coastal towns such as Kisumu (Kenya), Entebbe (Uganda), Bukoba, Muwanza and Musoma (Tanzania), connected with each other by ship routes and also to the cities of the Indian Ocean coast by railways.

The dam constructed in 1954 at Owen Falls on the Victoria Nile supplies electricity and water for various uses in Uganda and Kenya. There are many fish factories along this vast lake and this gives employment to a good percentage of people in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

To the part of Uganda, at the source of the Nile Ugandans and visitors enjoy bungee jumping which is done by Adrift Company and their experienced staff who will show you how bungeing is done to its fullest.

As water leaves Lake Victoria it ascends the Victoria Nile which is full of rapids and these have turned to be a good tourist attraction to Ugandan visitors and travelers. If at you like white water rafting and kayaking, your visit to this place will be a lasting memory in your heart.
