What a wonderful place. On arrival at the airport, Leopard Beach Resort and Spa Mombasa had arranged transport and we were met with a smile, iced water and towels and a air conditioned car.
We had one of the beautiful cottages with a private garden, views of the Indian Ocean on 3 sides, beautiful decor, flowers, wine and a jacuzzi in the room. The staff are amazing, everyone from the gardeners, room-boys, waiters etc meet and greet you with smiles and the wonderful Kenyan welcome of Jambo.
Wake up to see the sun rise from the sea, whereas in the North Sea the sun goes down in the sea, take an early morning walk on the beach with your feet on the soft white sand... do the yoga 'sun greeting' ... and take a lovely swim in the cristal clear azure water calm like the swimming pool and enjoy seeing the local fishermen with their outrigger boats, trying to catch some fish with their nets or spears.
Take a daily walk through the beautifully laid out garden of the Leopard Beach Resort and Spa Mombasa with its tropical trees, palms, flowering plants, hibiscus and enjoy your private garden-safari: four different species of monkeys can be spotted in the hotel garden: black faced vervets, Sykes monkeys, the beautiful longhaired black and white Colobus monkeys, even baboons, if you are lucky even with small one hanging at the belly or sitting on the backs of their mothers! And so many lizards, ranging from the monitor lizards of a meter long (if you think you see a crocodile walking around, it will most porbably be this creature) to the very tiny ones, gecko's and chameleons as well.
Then enjoy your breakfast: a lovely buffet is waiting for you, with all possible tropical fruits like mango, pineapple, passion fruit, eggs the way you wish them, ranging from an omelette with chillies of eggs fried sunny side up or scrambled, freshly prepared for you at the buffet, coffee and croissants, etc. etc.
Tired: choose between staring over the ocean from one of the gardens at the beach front with a book at your side, relaxing at the big pool at the oceanside or at the smaller pool next to the Spa.Time for lunch? Take a bite whilst remaining at the pool or in the hotelgarden or for instance the Sunday curry lunch in the main restaurant.
Dinner is or served at the table, with always a buffet with salads, desserts, sweet and fruit, lovely variety ranging from Arabian specialities to Iindian curries etc etc. or served in different places in the hotel to change the scenery.
Often there is some music: ever met 2 Black Kenyans in Masai red cloths wrapped around them playing Beatles songs on guitars?
The Leopard Beach Resort and Spa Mombasa offers a lot of treatments. If you decide to take a pedicure: you’ll be seated at the back of the spa, next to the bush, on a chair beneath an palmleaf parasol, with your feet in a white porcelain basin and whilst you’re being treated a family baboons plays around a rondavel of the spa. Out of this world experience!
We stayed in a lovely cottage, all cottages face the Indian Ocean, these are superb for romantic holidays, having their own private terraces! Some of our friends stayed in hotelrooms, and had or a terrace or a balcony and each room had it's own ambience and view into the lovely garden.Insider tips: take the wonderful whole day trip to Wasini Island for a great day out snorkeling and enjoying the most delicious fish and crabs, hilst sitting with your feet in the sand. Want to make a short safari: go into the Shimba Hills only an hour drive away from the hotel, where you can see Sable antilopes, elephants and other animals. And of course there is more: Mombasa, the North Coast, etc.!
