Loldia House Lodge is on the northern shore of Lake Naivasha. Most people arrive there by road from Nairobi (around two hours) and leave by plane to the Masai Mara (there is a direct flight from Loldia airstrip).

In the first afternoon (after we arrived) we did a boat trip on Lake Naivasha (to see hippos, pelicans on the lake and buffalos on the shore) and a night game drive in the grounds of Loldia ranch (we saw a big herd of buffalos, hippos and several antelopes).

The following day, after a visit to Loldia school, we went to Lake Nakuru National Park to see the flamingos and rhinos the reserve is famous for. It is worth doing this trip - it is impressive to see so many flamingos in one place.

It is also hard to see rhinos in the Masai Mara, and chances to see them at Lake Nakuru are very high.

On the third day in the Great Rift Valley we did a nature walk on Loldia farm, before having a great lunch (outside the main house) and taking the Safari Link flight from the Loldia airstrip to the Masai Mara.

Overall, I would recommend staying at Loldia House. It makes a good contrast before going on a safari in the Masai Mara.

Loldia House is quite simply a little piece of heaven. The location, on the shores of Lake Naivasha is stunning in its beauty, but it is the staff which make this place such a pleasure to visit, I can honestly say that I have never been so well looked after.

Loldia House Lodge is small, only 9 rooms and from the moment you arrive you are made to feel that nothing is too much trouble. The manager, Peter, should be considered to be one of Kenya's national treasures and will help you to decide on what trips or excursions you want to do.

The food is wonderful, breakfast and lunch are usually served on the lawn and dinner is in the dining room - I bought the Loldia House Lodge cookbook (proceeds from which go to help the local school) and your biggest problem will be the danger of overeating.

I stayed in one of the cottage rooms which was very comfortable, each night a log fire was made up in the fire place which made it cosy and warm.

You are escorted to and from your room by the ever-present guards as there are buffalo and hippos in the area - it is quite an experience to look out of your window to see a hippo grazing on the lawn outside!

The bird-life at Loldia is amazing - I have never seen so many eagles in one place - there are also many impala, dik dik, eland and bushbuck to be seen and monkeys regularly visit the trees in the garden. All the guides are very knowledgeable about the wildlife and plants.

A visit to Lake Nakuru is a must for the vast flocks of flamingo and for the rhino both black and white. The only down side is the awful "road" from Loldia House Lodge down to the main Naivasha - Nakuru road (but it is an experience!).

Loldia House, built in 1940, is an old fashioned stone house with views across lake Naivasha and lies on a supremely peaceful setting sheltered by giant wild fig trees and surrounded by lawns and flowering shrubs.

It can house upto 10 guests in its beautiful main house and cottage. The rooms at Loldia House are attractively decorated and are cool and pleasant with high ceilings and lovely old windows.

Loldia house Lodge has a wide range of activities to choose from, including walks in the estate guided by a naturalist, for birds, plants and mammals, boat trips on the Lake, night drives, trips to Lakes Nakuru, Bogoria or Hell's Gate, visit to Crater Lake sanctuary and visits to a local primary school, which guests at the house may choose to support
