We stayed on the south coast of Mombasa and had pre booked a safari at Mara Bushtops Maasai Mara for 3 nights in the middle of the holiday. On the morning of our safari we got picked up from the hotel and transported to a small airport, where we boarded our light aircraft! ( I am petrified of flying however loved every second of the trip).
We landed 2 hours later on a dirt track, complete with zebras crossing and was met by the wonderful staff of Mara Bushtops Maasai Mara.
We straight away escorted to our very luxurious jeep, and taken to the accommodation, which was totally out of this world. We were given champagne on arrival, with canapes and introduced to our personal butler, Andrew.
He escorted us to our room and told us not to venture out on our own due to the camp being open to the neighbouring wildlife!! and if we require to leave to press our buzzer and a Masai warrior, complete with spear would escort us!!!
We arrived at out tent, 'Cheetah' and was astounded at the view, the camp is not in the actual reserve, in fact some ten minute drive away, however you can still see all the animals from your tent.
The tents were warm, very luxurious, with indoor and outdoor showers! A hot tub on your veranda along with your own telescope. Every evening Andrew put a hot water bottle in our bed whilst we were out and turned the bed sheets up for us!
As for the food at Mara Bushtops Maasai Mara, I cannot say anything bad, it was all top notch and due to it being full board, you could have 3, three course meals a day!! In the evenings the chef came round the tables to recommend his special dish of the day.The desserts were fantastic. my friend and I requested that one evening we have our dinner on the veranda, this was done by Andrew at no extra cost to us.
The Safari's were fantastic. After viewing other vehicles in the reserve, we realised that we had the best vehices, they were 4 x4 and open sided, and could travel on most terrain.
On morning drives our guide Daniel had placed hot water bottles and blankets on the seats in the jeep! We had picnics on route and on a couple of game drives it was just my friend and I and the guide and a Masai warrior having a champagne lunch under a tree overlooking the bush! It was just something else.
We saw the big five, thanks to the great vehicle we were in, and the guide was fantastic, knew everything.
All in all I cannot fault this place, yes it is expensive but worth every penny.
The Mara Bushtops Maasai Mara has such a lovely feel, open fireplaces, candle light, wine cellar, fantastic outside camp fire overlooking salt lake. Food amazing, staff amazing and I recommend the hot air balloon ride, that was wonderful, especially the champagne breakfast after!!
There is something totally magical about the place and I would love to go back, but cant because I am now broke!!! If your going you have made the right choice. Have fun and drink the champagne in the morning its free!!!
