The view of Mara Sopa Lodge Masai Mara is lovely because the lodge is located in hills just next to the entrance to the Maasai Mara Reserve.
The hippos will come and graze right outside your room at night - well worth trying to stay awake for.The staff is by far the most charming that i have ever come across, and they treated us very well throughout our stay. The food is above average.
The National Park itself is out of this world!!! And, let’s face it, it’s the Park that everyone goes there for – NOT the hotels/lodges! Like others, we deliberated for a while before we booked our holiday about paying £250 to book the Balloon Safari.

You get about 80-90mins in the balloon, plus a champagne brekkie set out in the bush (4 glasses of bubbly by 9.30am is a weird experience!) and then a decent length game drive on the way back.
The food was very good and I particularly liked the decor in the restaurant. The hyena feeding is worth seeing if you can manage to stay up until 10 - make sure you get there a few minutes early to get a good spot - there are good views from the areas either side of the main viewing platform (elevated a good few feet above the feeding area). The shop near reception had some good postcards.
The electricity is on at certain hours so if you need to charge anything, do it when you go to dinner as you get about 6 hours charge time.
The hotel is fairly basic in it's facilities, on TV or anything like that. The staff are very polite and more than willing to help you. Tips are not expected at any Sopa lodge, it is in the company policy that staff are not permitted to solicit tips. As such the waiters try to get you to pay for your drinks as you leave the table
There are plenty of vervet monkeys around the grounds, so always keep an eye on your hat/bag as if you put them down and walk away, the monkeys won’t be shy at snatching them!
