Mweya Safari Lodge is by far the most developed safari lodge in Uganda.Situated in the middle of Queen Elizabeth national park, this lodge has proved to keep with the test of time. On this page we give you all the details about Safari lodge Mweya in Uganda.
No matter what,Mweya Safari Lodge in western uganda is still the best.Surprisingly enough, one of the few roads in Uganda that is not riddled with pot holes is the road to Mweya Lodge. There are 3 legs of your journey from Kampala: the first is to Masaka, next to Mbarara and then on to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
From the gate of the park it is 20kms to Mweya Safari Lodge. UWA are constantly grading the roads, making for easy access by a normal saloon car. Officials at the gate will provide you with an update on road conditions. There is, of course, the option for clients who choose the easy option to charter a plane
The entrance to Mweya Safari Lodge is very impressive with a sculpture of an enormous, lifelike elephant; one is greeted at reception by warm, professional and friendly staff. A massive pane window allows for a fantastic view of the Kazinga Channel, Lake Edward and the magnificent Rwenzori Mountain range where one can enjoy the complimentary ice cold towel and fresh fruit juice.
Mweya Safari Lodge has been developed and built with a feel for Africa. Its wooden decking, thatch roofing and wooden arches really blend this Lodge into the local environment. A porter is on hand to show you to your room and carry your luggage. Porters show real enthusiasm and have knowledgeable insights when explaining the surrounding areas and their history.
The Lodge is fitted with 25 standard rooms, all en-suite, fitted to world class standards. The comforting amenities include mosquito netted curtains, high pressure hot showers, a powerful ceiling fan and a veranda that offers a spectacular view of Kazinga Channel. In addition, there are basic rooms that overlook Lake Edward and of course the Presidential Suite, which has hosted Janet Museveni and many other celebrities quite impressively.
The pool area is truly magnificent and surrounded by wooden decking. You can overlook the Kazinga Channel and view the herds of buffalo, elephant and kob, as well as hippo. Lunch can be ordered poolside along with ice cold refreshments: the service is efficient and the quality is in line with expectation.
UWA offer launch boat trips just down the road from the Lodge. Cruising down Kazinga Channel, one can get a close up of the abundant wildlife that inhabits the channel banks.
Over 600 species of birds enjoy the flora and fauna of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. From weaverbirds to the elegant white pelican, those fortunate punters with powerful zoom cameras leave QEP with an abundance of colourful photographs of both wildlife and birds alike. At Mweya Safari Lodge, dinner is served in the Kazinga Channel Restaurant, more often than not on the restaurant’s Terracotta Balcony - dinner is a la carte, otherwise a buffet is on offer depending on occupancy. The a la carte menu consists of an array of cuisines; from Italian to Indian to continental to Ugandan, the food is delectable.
The three-course meal is extremely well presented, the quantity is adequate and food is certainly not cooked for the masses, making for flavoursome home cooking. There is a wide range of wines, ranging from Italian, French and Spanish to South African and Californian. The options are many. The restaurant manager and his staff are very attentive to your needs.
After dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the cozy Tempo Bar or outside around a huge log fire where the sightings of today’s discoveries are discussed. In the Tempo Bar, a massive fireplace is on hand and ready to be lit should the temperature drop. The detailed chandeliers, the comfortable chairs and the peaceful ambience make for a relaxing time. Whilst sipping on a cold Margherita ordered from an extensive cocktail menu, one can listen to soft background classical music that complements the setting.
The Tempo Bar is equipped with huge windows which offer in the day time an impressive, 270-degree view encompassing Kazinga Channel, Lake Edward, and in clear view the impressive Rwenzori Mountains, otherwise known as “mountains of the moon.” You can also see The Virunga Mountain range which runs from northern Rwanda to The Congo.
The mornings are particularly peaceful here. One is woken to the orchestra of birds singing sweet songs, melodies pure and bright. They are highly impressive for a Ugandan bird choir! Whilst enjoying a well-prepared English or continental breakfast on the restaurant balcony, you are intrigued by the tameness of the weaverbirds that consistently approach your plate for bread or toast crumbs. There is a resident family of warthog that visits the bar and balcony areas at dawn and dusk. They are extremely tame and allow for you to get really close in order to capture some great pictures.
Other activities include: daily game drives where you will encounter lion, hyena, giraffe, warthogs and all sorts of wildlife. And if one is lucky, even leopard …For primate fans, chimp trekking is a must. You can be led by an experienced UWA guide into the Kyambura Gorge, where you are guaranteed to see human kind’s closest relative. After that long hard day driving through the bush looking for beasties, you can enjoy a relaxing aromatherapy massage at an affordable price.
It has to be mentioned that all the staff we encountered during our stay were professional in every way and offered us levels of service beyond our expectations. The tiny details that really shone above the average standards in Uganda were simply spectacular: the folding of toilet paper ends, fabulous food service, educated staff, the list goes on.
The new manager of Mweya Safari Lodge is highly experienced, which can only continue to assure that the current offering of quality, service and value will not falter.
