The town and later the modern city of Nairobi grew up around the Norfolk hotel, which still has its own private tropical gardens.
The hotel is still the traditional starting point for safaris and the Lord Delamere Terrace is modern Nairobi's most famous meeting place, where drinks and light meals are served continuously from morning until midnight.
The Norfolk was expanded in 1999 and subsequently renovated in time for its centennial, which it celebrated in 2004. The hotel now offers accommodations in 165 guest rooms and suites, has eight conference rooms, the largest seating 175 delegates, a heated outdoor swimming pool, health club with gym, sauna and steam room, beauty salon, book shop and gift shops.
We had one lunch and dinner at the Norfolk and were quite happy with both. Good selection of dishes to suit most plates, and extremely well presented. Again, the service was of a high standard, with just the right level of friendliness.
The hotel has a colonial charm about it with photos of early settlers to Kenya adorning the walls of the corridors which make interesting viewing. The rooms are large and had comfortable beds and a great plasma TV. A nice touch was the complimentary cheese platter and wine that was left in our room one night.
The restaurant has an alfresco feel to it, being on the terrace overlooking the street so is great for people watching. The buffet breakfast was good. Hotel service overall was wonderful and the staff were very helpful and friendly.A gym, lovely pool, gift shop and business centre with internet are also available.
Not the Norfolk we knew of old (1960s, now much expanded) but still the most nostalgic hotel in Nairobi. If you want a slice of Africa of old, stay here. Ibis grill great food, lovely service.
