Ntungamo District information and Travel Guide

Ntungamo is a district in southwestern Uganda. Like most Uganda districts, its named after its 'chief town', Ntungamo.

Overview of Ntungamo

In the past, Ntungamo, together with the districts of Isingiro, Mbarara, Kiruhura, Ibanda and Bushenyi were parts of the Ankole Kingdom, a traditional monarchy that dates back to the 18th century. The kingdom was abolished by Milton Obote in 1967. The current president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, was born in Ntungamo District.

Location of Ntungamo

Ntungamo is bordered by Rwanda to the south, Isingiro District to the east, Mbarara District to the northeast, Bushenyi District to the north, Rukungiri District to the northwest and Kabale District to the southwest. The general coordinates of the district are: 00 53N, 30 16E. The district covers 2,056 square kilometres (794 sq mi) of which approximately 0.2% is open water, 3.4% is wetland and about 0.01% is forest.

Population of Ntungamo

The national census of 2002 estimated the population of Ntungamo at 386,816, with an annual population growth rate of 3%. It is estimated that in 2009, the population of the district is approximately 475,735.
