Rakai is a district in south-central Uganda. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Rakai.

Location

Rakai borders Kagera Region in Tanzania to the south, Kalangala District, Masaka District and Sembabule District to the east, Sembabule District to the north, Kiruhura District to the northwest and Isingiro District the southwest.

The district surface area totals 4,989 square kilometres (1,926 sq mi).Due to its proximity to Uganda's border with Tanzania, the district experiences much cross border commercial traffic to and from Bukoba. The first recorded case of HIV in Uganda was in Rakai and the district has been particularly hard hit by the disease. A number of medical research facilities are located here.

Population

In 2002, the national census estimated the population of the district at 405,631 with an annual growth rate of 3.8%. Given those statistics, it is estimated that in 2009, the population of the district is approximately 526,640

Administration

The district is divided into the following administrative units:

•Kabula County

•Kakuuto County

•Kooki County

•Kyotera County

•Rakai Municipality - The 'chief town' and district headquarters

•Kyotera Municipality

•Kalisizo Municipality.
