Safe Rwenzori Park Gear

Get the Top Best Mountaineering Gear for Rwenzori Park Gear and know what you shouldn't leave behind.

Before you decide to go for mountaineering on Mt Rwenzori, the following mountaineering Rwenzori park gear should not be left behind.Altitude sickness is common and exaggerated when the rate of climb is too rapid for your body to adjust to.We have been there and we know what it means above there.Believe it or not you life will change when you are there

The terrain is incredibly muddy. When out of the mud there is bog and when out of the bog it is generally very wet under foot. The wearing of trekking shoes is impossible and most people wear these shoes only around the huts.

For walking people resort to buying a pair of rubber boots (wellington boots/gum boots). Some choose to walk in running shoes but getting the shoes dry again is impossible during the trek.

The porters and guides all wear rubber boots even with crampons on! A walking stick is imperative for stability and probing the depth of the mud.

The Parks HQ at Ibanda direct a 15 minute Rwenzori awareness presentation to alert you to the fragility of the mountain but also to assess that you are properly equipped for the trek.

Plan to arrive at Rwenzori Mountains National Park and the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) offices at Nyakalengija in the morning so as to have ample time to rent equipment and be availed with guides and porters. But if you are strong enough you can come with your own equipments. The following are genersl equipments for Rwenzori mountaineering:-

• Rucksack,

• Sleeping bag for low temperature

• And sleeping mat,

• One plate,

• Cutlery,

• Mug,

• Knife,

• Gumboots,

• Water proof trousers,

• Poncho or rain coat,

• Heavy worm jacket,

• Hand gloves,

• Scarf and cup,

• Jumper,

• Torch,

• Bottle of water.

For whoever will climb the peaks some specialized equipment is required in addition:

• A pair of crampons,

• Snow gloves,

• Snow goggles,

• Climbing boots,

• Rope

• And ice axe.

Rules and regulations

To conserve Uganda’s nature humanity the following instructions should be put under consideration.

•Good Behavior at the huts and on the trail is appreciated:

•Don’t litter the park with non-burnable or biodegradable items like tins, plastic and silver foil.

•Personally collect these things and make sure you or your porters take them out of the park.

•Please use the latrines for all body waste.

•Respect others in the huts by sharing space, stoves, talking quietly

•Observe the prohibition of wood fire. Making fires using local wood is prohibited in the park.

• Use your own paraffin stove or gas or charcoal provided and

•Please be considerate to your porters by bringing minimum equipment.

•Extra personal gear means heavier loads or extra porters, which is bad for the porter but also for the environment.

•Minimize damage on trails by following your guideclosely-avoid making new paths. Each time a hiker makes a new route, the paths get wider and more vegetation turns to mad.

•Ask your guides on how to conduct yourself.
