A Safari lodge is an accommodation facility that is located and designed to put its guests in contact with Uganda’s nature and culture at grassroots level. Building style and design of a lodge generally feature materials such as wood, natural stone and thatch to make it blend perfectly with its surroundings and environment.
Most safari lodges in Uganda are game lodges, situated within, national game parks.
Quality and costs vary from location to location but they are reasonably priced for the budget conscious to unsurpassed luxury for those who wish to enjoy the wilds in style. Some few are not inside the parks e.g
Rates generally include all meals and nature experience activities. Providing guests with an unforgettable Africa experience, while being accommodated and cared for in a unique, memorable and personal way.
Lodges in game parks especially (Mweya safari lodge) are very good because Guests are hosted by game rangers who cater to every need and interest, assisting with the interpretation and explanation of Ugandan bush and wild life.
Safari game drives and bush walks, together with great evening bush dinners under the open Ugandan night sky are bound to make their stay in a lodge an unforgettable experience.
Paraa Safari Lodge
Stepping inside Paraa Safari Lodge you are instantly swept back to the early explorer era. The maps, pictures and equipment of those bygone times adorn the walls and tables of the lodge, lending it the feel of an old hunting lodge. There is no hunting these days, however, I am pleased to add.It is hard to believe all this luxury and pampering, lies to close to Uganda's most impressive waterfall and a national park rich in our own native animals.
The launch to the falls and back takes three hours, during which time my eyes are fed with the most electrifying sights in Uganda. The river is lined with hippopotamus. Many of them strike poses for our cameras. The big winners were the bird lovers. From America and Europe, they were impressed by our white and pink backed pelicans, the orange - beaked fish eagles, and saddle - billed storks.
That afternoon we set out on the lodge's complimentary game drive through the national park. Jackson's hartebeast, Bush buck, Ugandan Kob, Defassa water buck, Bohor Reed buck and Oribi were just a few of the beauties we spied. Rothschild's giraffes, warthogs, elephants and hippos were seen. But nothing prepared me for the magic view of the falls from above. The power of surging, crashing water is captivating. I stood near a rock watching in awe. Ah, Paraa. The tranquility and beauty of the moon as it changes to near orange in the evenings, and its magic reflection on night waters it is a place to totally get away.
Semliki Safari Lodge
This lodge is found in Semliki Game reserve Park in western Uganda. At this lodge you will stay in large canvas tents with permanent thatched roofs. Each tent includes en-suite bathrooms with running water and private verandas with a stunning panoramic view.
Imagine lying on a hand carved four poster bed draped in muslin. Persian carpets and other soft touches ensure that this is far from roughing it in the bush. We have always taken comfort seriously.
Sofas are piled with cushions, there is plenty of lounging space, loads of books to read, warm muffins brought to you in bed with your morning tea or coffee, and soft fleecy blankets on the beds.
The food at the lodge has often been referred to as the 'Best food in Uganda' - everything is home-made; from the bread baked daily, to the soups, the relishes and chutneys. While at the lodge you may choose to do nothing more that relax by the pool which overlooks the Blue Mountains of the moon, or partake in a number of activities that we run from the lodge:
Mweya Safari Lodge
Mweya Safari Lodge is a beautiful lodge located on a peninsula within the heart of the spectacular Queen Elizabeth National Park ideal for Uganda safaris travelers and visitors. Our stay at the Mweya Safari Lodge for two weeks ago was amazing! What a view on entering the lobby of the lodge across the lakes
The feeling of space around the hotel and grounds was quite different from the more enclosed lodges of the jungles etc. The patio with a magnificent view over the lakes was a favourite place for breakfast each morning and the colourful, twittering birds are so entertaining when a table was vacated! Unconcerned wart hogs and mongoose wandered the lawns adding to the feeling of nature at its best. The bedrooms are spacious with doors opening on to a patio with a lake view.
The wildlife tour was enjoyable- the daily boat trip in the Kazinga Channel is not to be missed. We saw elephants, crocodiles, monitor lizards, hippos by the dozen, buffalo and literally hundreds of different birds. The scenery is magnificent, well worth a visit.
Mweya Safari Lodge is spectacularly located with incredible reviews as far as the eye can see with the Mountains of the Moon visible on a clear day.The Lodge it self is tasteful decorated and the rooms are most comfortable.Service couldn't be better...the staff very friendly to kids.Food was good and the breakfasts worth a mention.
The wildlife and birds are brilliant and uncommercialised (unlike most other African destinations). This, with the warmth and friendliness of all Ugandans across the country makes it a place and country to visit. If you want more information about this national park, click here
Jacana Safari Lodge
This is another lodge that is found in Queen Elizabeth National park. After visiting this park and stayed at Mweya safari lodge, we were anxious to give it another visit in future. In June 2008 we took off to Queen Elizabeth national park for our second visit.
Originally we thought we were to be booked at Mweya Lodge since we had stayed sometimes before at mweya safari lodge but instead we were booked at Jacana. Now, that we have spent two nights at Jacana, I'm happy that we were booked at Jacana, rather than Mweya, at which we still spent an entire day.
To reach Jacana, you travel down a track for several kilometers from the tarmac road, enter the Queen Elizabeth National Park gate, and then the Jacana gate.
Upon arrival to the open-air reception area, we were greeted most professionally, offered cool hand towels and a complimentary drink. The hotel manager was the most professional we encountered. Unlike Mweya, which is perched on an outcrop overlooking the Kazinga channel in wide-open spaces, Jacana is privately nestled in the woods overlooking a crater lake.
While not as conveniently located for a game drive and certainly not the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, which leaves from Mweya, it is still certainly close enough. It is also closer to Ishasha if you wish to see tree climbing lions, and very close the Kyambura Gorge where you can do a chimp walk in a stunning, and very unique, setting.
The lodge itself is a series of open-air structures overlooking the Crater Lake. There is a bar with a small, but decent choice of wines, both boxed and bottled. There you can sip a very cold beer and recount your wildlife adventures while observing the lake.
There is also a restaurant which shares the view of the lake and the Jacana pool. And while you're eating you may see baboons and vervet monkeys. The food was above average with mild curry sauces and a full choice of entrees.
Dessert was good, too. A unique feature at Jacana is a small floating structure on which you can have the staff steer you to the middle of the lake and have dinner. We didn't do this, but it looks like fun.
Between the bar and the restaurant is a gathering area, complete with a large fireplace that is lends itself to conversation, card-playing or book reading. We conversed with the Manager and the Marketing Director, both of whom were friendly and interesting.
The owner was also present during our visit, but we didn't get to chat with him. If we had, I would tell him that the atmosphere at Jacana is one of relaxed comfort combined with professional service.
Sure there is limited hours for electricity and the hot water is fueled by outdoor wood-burning furnaces and there is no air-conditioning (show me one that has it in Uganda), but we were comfortable. The electricity was there for us to charge our computer and camera batteries in the morning and in the night, the hot water was consistent as the staff kept the fire burning, and the weather was perfectly cool so our stay was great.
The rooms are individual octagonal stilted-structures, each overlooking the Crater Lake. They are spacious and blend well with the environment. They are windows are well-protected from the resident baboons and other wildlife and you're advised to keep your door shut and locked for the same reason!
Each of our two cabana rooms featured a sitting area with two chairs and a table from which you can read and/or converse while viewing the lake. The bathroom facilities were well equipped and everything worked properly.
We had some laundry done here and everything came back dry and folded. It was reasonably priced.
At night after dinner, there was a performance of drumming and dancing which was fascinating and thrilling with a couple of the lads walking on their hands around the fire pit. Unfortunately, we were so tired we could only stay for two songs. They were very good, though.
There is a swimming pool just down the stairs from the restaurant and bar and, it looked clean and comfortable. Another great place to relax, too.
If you're looking for more European luxury at Queen Elizabeth National Park, you may want to consider Mweya. If you're looking for something just a bit more adventurous, but certainly a far cry from camping or overlanding, we would recommend Jacana Safari Lodge every time.
