Samburu Intrepids Hotel rooms are permanent tents sitting on platforms above the river bank. The rooms are cool, shaded by large trees. The beds are comfortable with ceiling fans to take the edge of the afternoon heat. The bathrooms, whilst not large were fine.

We didn't want for anything by way of amenity. Do watch out as the local monkeys have become very skilled at unzipping the tents.

The key difference at this lodge are the staff. Just so cheerful, helpful and informative. The evening talks, by local Samburu warriors came to life with their knowledge and enthusiam.

In addition to the morning and evening game drives we took a guided walk with one of the Samburu warriors which opened a new dimension to a better understanding the eco system that makes up the park.

The meals at Samburu Intrepids Hotel are a notch above the standard, we had expected in these safari lodges - less buffets and more cooked to order (even in the buffets there were cooked to order dishes). The staff was all very happy and genuinely friendly, addressing you my name in the majority of instances. You were made to feel very welcome.

It really felt like a special place in the middle of the wild. The tents themselves were very nice with firm, comfy beds, nice linens, great bathroom. And perhaps nicest of all, a ceiling fan, that made our afternoon nap a really relaxing break.Click for more information about this Hotel in Kenya

We saw plenty of game over the course of three days. Cheetah, lots and lots of elephants, lots of giraffe, and the list goes on and on.

The landscape itself is worth the price. Some of the new animals for us were the Cox Dik Dik, Hornbill, Black Faced Velvet Monkey, Goliath Heron, Black Headed Heron, Grevy's Zebra,Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Vulturine Guineafowl, Red Billed Hornbill, Olive Baboon, Black sided Jackal eating a Dik Dik, Helmeted Guineafowl, Nile Crocodile, Butler Eagle, Secretary bird, monitor lizard, Gamma Lizard, Narina Trogon, Pell Chating Goshawk and Klipspringers. We also saw many Gerenuks standing on the back legs and reaching up to get to the leaves with their long necks.

At Samburu Intrepids Hotel the rooms were extremely clean and comfortable and had an aura of African romance about them. They have lovely views of the river where an occasional camel may stroll by. When we returned from our game drive we were able to take hot showers.

Then off to the evening program where Francis gave a multimedia presentation about his people - the Samburu. Francis was willing to talk to us for as long as we asked questions, and was extremely helpful.

At Samburu Intrepids Hotel the multi-course dinner had a selection of 3 entrees - all of which were excellent (we shared tastes of each others choices). By that point I had already stated "I want to come back here for my honeymoon."

The power was turned off at midnight and we were able to hear the night moves of lion and elephant. It was a delightful sleep.

I was given a personal wakeup call the next morning by the staff who brought coffee and tea biscuits. During the game drive we saw reticulated giraffe, elephant, buffalo, lion, oryx, and a host of smaller animals.

We came back to an amazing buffet breakfast. There were 2 chefs available to cook your breakfast any way you wanted and they did it well. There was an amazing array of meat, potato, fruit, baked goods any way you could imagine.

The two gift shops have wonderful souveniers that are competetively priced. I actually did a lot of my shopping there as the selection was excellent.

Francis and his Samburu buddies are there for demonstrations, answer questions, and to help give a true Samburu experience. As with all of the Samburu Intrepid personnel, they were friendly and open. The lodge employs top notch folks.Click for more information about rates and availability

Samburu Intrepids Hotel is set in the semi- arid desert of northern Kenya in the quiet western section of the Samburu National Reserve. Shaded by tall acacias, the lodge is a cool oasis in the desert surroundings.

Only 50 minutes flight from Nairobi, this luxury tented lodge has been designed to recreate the romance and charm of an East African safari as undertaken in the early years of the century.

On first appearance, it is more remeniscent of a fantasy tree house set on stilts with its vaulted thatched roofs and sprawling wooden teraces.

Set under the shade of trees, the tents are elevated on individual decks overlooking the river and shielded with thatched roofs.

They are the best that Samburu has to offer: spacious, comfortable, handsomely furnished with hand crafted mahogany furniture oversized four poster beds, en-suite bathrooms with showers, twin hand basins, running hot and cold water, flush toilets and electricity, lounge and a bar.

There is also a free form 'oasis' swimming pool and sunbathing garden, a boutique with safari essentials, internet, fax and postal services are just a few of the facilities available.

The visitors at Samburu Intrepids Hotel club enjoy touring of samburu villages, a treat of traditional dance by local warriors and maidens, game drives with resident guides, lectures and shows on culture and wildlife among other host of activities.
