Sarova Salt Lick Game lodge

From the moment we got there we knew that Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge was a special place - it was dusk when we arrived and completely still and silent except for the occasional noise of a zebra or baboon.

Salt Lick is perched on unique stilts and linked with sturdy wooden rope bridges which mean that animals are free to wander right underneath your bedroom - they're so tall that even a giraffe can walk underneath easily

There is nothing that will ever compare to sitting on a balcony or at a bar with a watering hole within 25 feet and have wild animals taking turns coming and going for a drink.

One of the most amazing experiences of my life was waking up to the noise of elephants roaring outside our bedroom window.....absolutely fantastic!

I visited Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge e on concrete pillars in 2008 and several years later I still hold fond memories of my experience there. Accommodation, including the experience of the elephants rubbing themselves against the concrete pillars - sublime. Staff and surrounding scenery - brilliant. Sunrise breakfast - unforgettable. Observing each group of animals negotiate drinking times at the watering holes just a few metres away - a most unique and certainly indelible memory.

Watching the animals at the waterhole is an amazing experience. There is always a new group of elephants coming in to drink, and they controlled which other animals had access and when.

The viewing area is open air so it is not just a visual display but we also enjoyed listening to the animals. I had no idea elephants were so vocal; they actually woke me up several times throughout the night.

Lunch is buffet style with a good selection of hot/cold food in an attractive dining room just off the reception area.

There is a good sized pool outside in the gardens which provides a refreshing break from the dusty game tracks, there are also many loungers and parasols which give ample shade from the powerful overhead sun.

The afternoon game drive takes you through the reserve on its' way to salt lick lodge. We saw numerous elephants, giraffe, buffalo, water buck, impala, baboons, monkeys on our trip. The lodge has a great setting in a large clearing adjacent to 2/3 waterholes.

The advantage being that you can clearly see the animals approaching from some considerable distance.Dinner is very good indeed and my advice would be to get one of the waiters at the lunchtime service at Taita Hills to reserve you a table at the front which overlooks the waterholes.

Afterwards there are some superb viewing opportunities to see/photograph the animals as they come in to have there own sun downers at the waterhole.

Overall Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge is a great lodge with good rooms, great food and superb opportunity to see some wildlife up close. Taita Hills itself is beautiful and a game drive there is very special. There is a lovely green valley where the river runs through it and we saw elephant, water buffalo and baboons here.
