The three-story main building looks like a colonial mansion, with its haughty stone and wood exterior draped in flowering bougainvilleas.
The reception area and lounge at Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge tsavo West has a tall bamboo ceiling, a split level floor of parquet wood floor below and stone above, centered on a large round fireplace. It is furnished with bamboo chairs with pastel pink cushions and wooden tables, and the wall is hung with ethnic style paintings. To the right of the main entrance is a gift shop, while the restaurant, which serves hearty buffet meals, is to the right. The attractive landscaped gardens behinds the main gardens are traversed by a small river and have a swimming pool. Game drives in the sanctuary are the main attraction here. Those with private vehicles can drive themselves around (maps are available and junctions are well signposted) but guided game drives offered by the lodge are more likely to yield sightings of lions and other elusive predators. Because Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge tsavo West lies outside the national park system, night drives are also offered, and these come with a good chance of spotting nocturnal creatures such as leopards, genet, civet and bushbaby. A more unusual goal for day trips would be the nearby Taita Hills, a scenic and fertile range that provides verdant contrast to the dusty red plains of Tsavo and is the only refuge of the critically endangered Taita thrush. Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge tsavo West large rooms are old fashioned and appealing, in keeping with the general colonial feel of the hotel. They have parquet wood floors, large double or twin bed with walk-in mosquito net, bedside lamps, hardwood writing desk, bamboo chairs, fan and coffeemakers.
The tiled bath has a combination tub and shower and marble sinks. All rooms have a balcony overlooking the gardens. This is an excellent hotel, with a pleasant atmosphere, comfortable accommodations, very good service and food, and great game viewing.
