_______________________________________We spent two weeks at the Southern Palms Beach Resort Ukunda. We give the holiday 5 out of 5.
We arrived at the hotel to smiling faces a warm welcome and a cold drink. We were checked in very efficiently and taken to our room with in ten minutes. As we stepped out of reception there was a bit of a wow factor. Click for more information about this hotel in Kenya
We have traveled the world and stayed in many good hotels but this has definitely got a wow factor. The pool complex is magnificent, nicely laid out with plenty of space in the sun and also in the shade under the palm trees.
Having said that everything worked there was always hot water and the air conditioning works well. The four poster bed was very comfortable.
We were half board (breakfast and dinner). Breakfast always had a huge choice of food from the traditional English fry up, pancakes, fruit, bread cakes ect. For those that like a lay in a late breakfast was served from 10 am at the cafe bar down by the beach. \
Dinner was buffet style and again there was a huge choice of food and good quality. Half board residents could also chose to book the Italian roof top restaurant and the grill in the middle of one of the pools at no extra cost
At Southern Palms Beach Resort Ukunda, it was a really fantastic holiday. Our friends got married at the hotel, and the staff went out of their way to make the day really special.
The rooms at Southern Palms Beach Resort Ukunda were clean and well appointed. All have good views (you pay more for the sea view), but the sea is never far away!
The pools are cleaned daily by an army of cleaners, and the grounds are kept clear of any fallen leaves and rubbish! There are always fresh flowers (collected from the grounds) on the tables in the restaurants.
The Boriti bar - where there is entertainment every evening - closes at 11pm, but the bar at reception is open 24 hours if that is what you want.Check rates and availability of this hotel here
Southern Palms Beach Resort Ukunda has its own private ocean front of sultry tree fronds swaying gently on the sea breezes over a wide swathe of brilliant white sand.
Behind, interlocking cascading swimming pools abutt an al fresco restaurant and bar area with panoramic views of the Indian ocean. This fine establishent maintains a high standard in keeping with the strive for quality in Kenya's tourist service sector.
There are many activities that can either be organised or enjoyed ad hoc, ranging from a wide selection of water sports to an afternoon's siesta ! Facilities are in conformity with the accepted 4 star levels - several covered and open restaurant areas, an al carte option and busy bar areas.
The reception area is warm and welcoming and spacious leading to cool room decors.
Close to Mombasa, the property is in an ideal location to offer visitors easy access to facilities also close by in Diani - shopping, seeking arts and crafts, entertainment and a range of tours and activities to be enjoyed on the coast, or inland to the famous wildlife areas of the country.
In Mombasa itself, time is well spent visiting the Old Port where dhows sailing the Indian Ocean dock to load and unload their wares ranging from exotic spices from the Orient to cloth which is later woven to kangas or kikois.
Sights to see in the town include the historical Fort Jesus, a Portugese fort hundreds of years old and now preserved as a museum. Ancient canons lie facing the sea - evidence of the direction of expected attack - and not inland.
Diani Beach is perhaps the most spectacular ribbon of flawless tropical sands on the Kenya coast, shaded with palm and Casuarina. Behind are patches of original forest, the most extensive of which is Jadini - a morning's trek from the resort - where colobus monkeys, baboons, birds and butterflies run riot.
A few more kilometres inland is the cool and refreshing wildlife getaway of the Shimba Hills National Park. At the far end of the coast is unspoilt Shimoni, with its relics of the slave trade and coral gardens. The Kisite/Mpunguti Marine Park can be reached from Shimoni or nearby Wasini lsland, a lovely trip by dhow or motorboat to an intriguing underwater world.
If you travel further north, from Mtwapa up to Malindi the scenery is a collage of rolling baobab, sisal plantations, cashew trees, thick jungle and swamp up to an even bigger extinct river course at Kilifi Creek. On the way there is the lost city of Jumbala Mtwapa - a long abandoned relic shrouded in jungle.
The mangrove swamps are the seasonal roost of thousands of Carmine Bee-eaters which descend in a riot of exotic colour and is a most unusual sight.
