St. Lawrence University is one of the latest to be established in this country. And with it has a come a whole new outlook to university education. The university comes with an inclination to providing hands-on skills to enable students sustain themselves after completing their courses.
“Our main focus is grooming a generation of practical and globally-oriented job-creators. The university is unique because it will produce entrepreneurs, while emphasising financial education, youth, women and personal empowerment in order for its graduates to be versatile and globally-exposed by travelling abroad through the university’s exchange programmes)” says Frank Mbaaga, the Academic Registrar.
Mbaaga says all the courses and programmes, especially the five compulsory courses, are geared towards achieving the above.
“All students have to take two courses of entrepreneurship development, information and communication technology, transformation modelling, empowerment and a research paper/project.
Students of St. Lawrence University retire after lectures
Lawrence Mukiibi, the chairman board of trustees, says: “Our vision is to see that every student who graduates from St Lawrence University (SLAU) is able to apply the knowledge and skills learnt, to identify opportunities and seize them to create employment and to excel at the workplace.
Mukiibi says the university will thrive on its unique curriculum that is practical and user-friendly.
Legal Status of St Lawrence University
The university was licensed by NCHE on July 6, 2007. All its programmes are accredited.The university targets to be chartered by 2010.
Location of St Lawrence University
The university is located 3km from the city centre in the extensive and modernised premises of former St. Lawrence Citizens’ High School, Kabaka’s Lake Campus.

To produce academically excellent graduates, exemplary citizens and pragmatic leaders capable of applying the acquired knowledge to enhance development.
Admission requirements Degrees
The university has various entry schemes:
Direct entry scheme
• Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent
• At least two principal passes at obtained at the same sitting in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent.
Diploma entry scheme
• At least a second-class diploma from a recognised institution.
Access programme
• Kenya Certificate of Education (KSCE) and a minimum mean grade of C (plain).
Mature age entry scheme
• Applicants must at least 22 years and must have passed the Mature Age Entry Examination.
Diploma programmes
To be admitted to the diploma candidates will have:
• Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or its equivalent.
• At least one principal pass in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent. (Kenyan applicants should have at least C- or its equivalent.)Prospective applicants whose final high school grades are in percentages and average point systems e.g. Sudan, DRC, Rwanda and Burundi, must have the grades first equated or standardised by the Uganda National Examinations Board before admission to St. Lawrence University.
Courses duration at St Lawrence University
• Degree will be done in three years, i.e. six semesters,
• The diploma in two years
• Certificates in 1 year.
Programmes will be offered during Day (D), Evening (E), and weekends (W) as indicated below. Five faculties and one institution will offer the following degrees, diplomas and certificates.
Academic facilities: Library
The library has tremendously grown. It has over 3,100 books and one of the collaborating universities has promised to equip it with an E-Library. The library has several computers and Internet facilities. Internet connectivity is especially important for students doing Bachelor of Computer Science (BASC) and Bachelor of Information Technology (BAIT), not forgetting the rest of the students who need the course for general knowledge.
Accommodation facilities at St Lawrence University
Currently, the university accommodates 150 female and 80 male students in single or double rooms. However, it has the capacity to accommodate over 500 students. Beds and mattresses are provided by the university.
Recreation facilities at St Lawrence University
The university has a well-maintained playground where football, netball, rugby, volleyball and basketball are played. It also has two students’ common rooms where in-door games such as chess, Ludo and scrabble are played. Television sets connected to DSTV and GTV are watched by students. Students who want to swim take the university bus to go to St. Lawrence Schools and Colleges which have swimming pools.
Staff qualifications
The university has six professors, 12 PhDs and the rest of the teaching staff, who are 40 have MAs or MScs.
Number of computers
The university has 120 computers. Ten computers are used by the administrative staff and the rest are in the Library and in the computer laboratories. In 2008/09, the university plans to have more computer labs to facilitate the teaching of Computer Science because, as explained above, this course is compulsory to all students.

Accreditation to foreign universities
St Lawrence University has made arrangements to collaborate with other universities. Arrangements with the university of the Pacific have been finalised. Two visiting fellows will spend 2008/09 at St. Lawrence, implementing the collaboration.
Memoranda of understanding have been signed with the University of Tulane, Case Western University and University of Munich. Prof. Helen Liebling, the university vice-chancellor, has initiated collaboration with Warwick University and the University of Coventry. Two universities in Japan and one in Holland have been invited to collaborate with St. Lawrence University.
Through this collaboration, universities will exchange staff (faculty), and students. Joint teaching and supervision of BAs, MAs and PhDs will be carried out. And lecturers will conduct joint research and will seek funds to finance students’ undergraduate and graduate research projects.
The chancellor of St Lawrence University, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, who is also the vice-President, revealed that he had already linked up the university with Case University in Seattle, Pacific University in Louisiana and Tulane University in Los Angeles, all in the US.
