Although many A’ level students look at universities as the only option for further studies, there are many tertiary institutions that provide alternative programmes at diploma level.
Uganda Tertiary Institutions include National Teacher colleges, Uganda Colleges of Commerce, Agricultural Colleges and Technical colleges. Others are theological colleges, tourism colleges, media institutes, medical colleges, law colleges and cooperative colleges.
In 2006, there were 113 tertiary institutions in the country. About 33% of them are owned by the Government, while 67% are privately-owned.
National Teachers Colleges (NTCs)
National Teachers Colleges were first introduced in the 70s.The Institute of Teacher Education in Kyambogo was launched first followed by other 10 teacher colleges between 1982 and 1985. In 2006, five of the colleges were closed.
Those closed last year are Nkozi, Mitala Maria in Mpigi district, Masindi in Masindi district, Ngetta in Lira district, Kaliro in Kamuli district and Kakoba in Mbarara district. Teacher colleges admit 6,500 student teachers every year. In 2006, no PhD holder lectured at the teacher colleges. Masters holders comprised 2.5% of lecturing staff, while the majority were first-degree holders.

Programmes offered
A student teacher is normally required to take two main subjects. However, it is also possible for one to take one subject referred to as a double main. They include English, Agriculture, Fine Art and Mathematics. Other subjects include History, Geography, Luganda, Music, Political Education, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In addition, student teachers are also required to study professional subjects like Sociology, Psychology, Education, Management and Philosophy
How to apply
Applications are made through the Joint Admissions Board. One needs to have attained two principal passes.
Accommodation
There are halls of residence for male and female students. There are also 10 private hostels outside the main campuses.
Uganda Technical Colleges
Courses offered include Civil Engineering, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical engineering, Electrical Installation, Metal Fabrication, Brick Laying, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Motor Vehicle engineering. To be admitted, one should have obtained at least two principal passes in science subjects at A’ level or they should have a certificate in a related field.
On average, technical colleges admit 2,500 students every year. The technical colleges did not have a lecturer with a PhD by 2006. They had only one lecturer with a masters degree, while the majority were first degree and a few with post graduate diplomas. Major technical colleges include Kichwamba in Kabarole district and Elgon College in Mbale
Colleges of Commerce
These pass out diploma holders majoring in business courses. There diploma programmes are Diploma in Business Studies Marketing, Accountancy, Secretarial courses and Book Keeping.
Admission to Uganda Tertiary Institutions
One should have obtained at least two principal passes at A’ level, especially in Economics and Mathematics, or should hold a certificate in a related field. By of 2006, there were seven PhD holders lecturing in colleges of commerce constituting 1.3% of the total staff. There were 59 masters holders, 473 first degree holders and 226 diploma holders. Colleges of commerce include the Tororo College of Commerce in eastern Uganda, and College of Commerce in western Uganda.
Agricultural colleges
Courses offered include Agricultural Mechanisation, Plant Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine. One needs at least two principal passes at A’ level in related science subjects or hold a certificate in a related field to be admitted.
