The Tortilis Camp Hotel Amboseli is beautiful and the location stunning but the atmosphere and service with constant smiles are what make it really special.
We were treated like friends by everyone at the camp. The tents are very nicely situated to give maximum privacy and peace and quiet. There is quite a steep hill from the tents to the reception and dining areas so it may not be a good choice for anyone with limited mobility. The food is superb and the bar fully stocked:
If you are willing to pay a bit extra Tortilis Camp Hotel Amboseli is the place to stay in Amboseli National Park in Kenya. A peaceful and romantic setting. Staffs are attentive and prompt. You can wake up to see wildlife meters from the end of your bed. The views of Mt Kilimanjaro are amazing. You are further away from the main wildlife areas, but this does not pose a problem for game drives
One of Amboseli’s main claims to fame is its position overlooking the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. What you may not know before you go is that your chances of seeing the mountain are, to say the least, hit-and-miss, as more often than not it is shrouded in cloud. But at our time of visit, the mountain made an exceptionally lengthy appearance, lasting from dawn until after lunch, providing a great backdrop for our photos.
Tortilis is perched on a hillside, with the reception, spacious bar and dining room overlooking the mountain and the 17 tents below. Even in very high temperatures, the situation of the public areas and the way the tents are constructed attracts the breeze and I never felt uncomfortably hot.
The tents are constructed under thatched roofs, and attached to brick built en-suite shower rooms. Each has a veranda which is a lovely, cooling place to relax between game drives. There is a pleasant swimming pool and a watering hole that attracts animals large and small.
Game drives are in private vehicles, which give you the flexibility to do exactly what you want when you want without having to defer to other guests. An absolute must is the bush breakfast. At around 8.30 your driver will rendezvous with the camp’s chefs and waiters under a pre-determined acacia tree and there you will be served a full, cooked hot breakfast – with omelettes and pancakes cooked to order and all the usual trimmings. Amazing.
