How to Step By Step on How to Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda

Do you want to travel to Bwindi on a private vehicle or public transport means?:On this page we will give you detailed routes one should use to reach Bwindi impenetrable forest Park



If you are passing Kabale,driving the Kabale-Buhoma road requires at times a 4 Wheel drive vehicle especially in the wet season.

All junctions on the road from Kabale to Buhoma are well sign posted (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park)

A right turn some 15 km from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park which is well sign posted signals your nearly there,but man .....because of a mountainous terrain,the speed must reduce.

The route continues to Kanungu. At the traffic circle turn left direction Kanyantorogo where again turn left at this traffic circle.

Remember all directions are sign posted 'Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park'. Pass Ntumgarmo Tea Factory and through the village of Butogota.

Route via Kabale

At the second junction on the Kisoro road sign posted Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park you will arrive at Buhoma via Ruhija. This is the most scenic route. Don’t forget to use the 4 wheel drive especially during the rain season.



Route through Ntungamo

On the way from Mbarara town in western Uganda,you continue to Ntungamo town.1 km after Ntumgarmo Town turn right sign posted Rukungiri. This is an all weather tarmac road that will eventually be completed through to the Ishasha border post. This is the fastest route if traveling directly from the east.

At Rukungiri follow signs for Kanungu where you will pick up the Kabale-Buhoma route at the traffic circle. This is the fastest route to Bwindi from Kampala since the completion of the Ntumgamo-Rukungiri tarmac road.



Travel to Bwindi By Public Means

There is a direct bus between Kampala and Buhoma daily in both directions. The bus leaves Kampala at around 06.00am, arriving in Buhoma around 6 pm.

The bus leaves Buhoma at 05.00am. The other alternative is the irregular pick-ups and taxis that connect Kabale and Butogota.

If there is no transport from Kabale to Butogota, take a Kihihi taxi as far as Kanyantorogo, from where you can pick up the bus as it comes through from Kampala or take a private hire vehicle.

Reaching Nkuringo

Nkuringo is home to the 4th group of habituated Mountain Gorilla's in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. For those travelling by public means Nkuringo is accessed from the Kabale - Kisoro road. Take the public bus from Kampala to Kisoro a 500KM journey, approximately 11 hours.

On arrival in Kisoro you will need to arrange a private hire vehicle to take you to Nkuringo some 90 minutes journey (36 kms) Ushs70,000- each way.Public transport to and from Kisoro is available on Monday's and Thursday's, market days in Kisoro. The vehicle leaves Nkuringo at first light in the morning returning at days end.

Visitors can also get to Nkuringo by travelling to Buhoma on the direct daily bus from Kampala. After staying in Buhoma one night the next day walk through the park 12kms 4 to 5 hours to Nkuringo with a ranger/guide. You can return the same way or proceed to Kisoro. National Park and ranger/guide fees must be paid.

Best time to Travel:

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a rain forest and thus is wet all year round, although of course the rains increase during the seasons of April-May and October-November this hinders much to those who travel to bwindi especially without 4 wheel drive vehicles.So next time you plane to visit this park, make sure that you first ask for the weather at the time you are planning to visit so that you my not get disappointed at a short notice.
