Staying at Treetops Hotel Aberdare is a unique experience - and I've now been twice. I'd go every weekend if it wasn't so far away.
The viewing facilities, both indoor and outside, are exceptional and there is a graded bell system for warning you of wildlife appearances during the night. Dinner - hot and delicious - is taken 'assembly' style with a neat sliding service rack in the centre of the tables and there was also afternoon tea.
Yes, the rooms are tiny and you have to share shower rooms that remind you of school, but you are on safari. 'Roughing it' comes with the package. Personally, I loved it. When I looked out my bedroom window at the family of elephants including babies so close they could see the whites of my eyes, I knew it was worth it!
The excitement that night when a group (don't know the collective term sorry!) of hyena's cornered a female water buffalo and her baby in the water. It was so tense and you were torn between wanting something to happen and not wanting anything to get hurt! There were approx 12 plus hyenas in the end but the baby got away safely.
I only led on the bed for about an hour, everything was just so exciting, didn't want to miss anything so stayed up top near enough all night wrapped up in my blanket(supplied) with my bottle of beer and my camera and what fantastic photos i have taken.
What a night! Lots of elephants, large and small, various other animals and the most exciting was the leopard who had come down to the water hole to take a drink. Couldn't believe it first but there it was. It was around about one in the morning.
We contacted the ranger downstairs who then rang the famous buzzer twice, within a short time lots of sleepy people appeared but unfortunately for them it did not stay around long.I only wish i could have stayed there more nights.Click here for more information about Treetops Lodge in Aberdare National ParkTime stands still here for guests who while away many an hour relaxing at the pool watching the animals quench their thirst. Safaris depart just after sunrise each day in an open, fully equipped vehicle and again after you have enjoyed afternoon tea. The evening game drive continues into the night. The evening always holds a sense of anticipation as the rare and elusive nocturnal species begin their night activities.
