We arrived late at Turtle Bay Beach Club Malindi in the evening after a very long day's travelling from a safari in the Masai Mara, to a very damp Watamu. After we were checked in and shown to our room (more about that later) we were told that some food had been put to one side for us in the restaurant.

At 10.30pm the most we were expecting was maybe some leftovers. What they did was to seat us, get us a very welcome cold pint of Tusker, apologise profusely for keeping us waiting (they had called the chef back down to the kitchen especially for us) and produced (within 15 mins) a steak with all of the trimmings and a dessert.

This then set the standard for the rest of our stay there. We had booked a Lamu room but didn't actually find out we'd been upgraded to a Beach Front room until we noticed it on a hotel plan a couple of days later.

The reception staff didn't say anything at all about it when we checked in, so our only really very minor gripe was the fact that we couldn't say 'Thank You' to them for doing that!

The high standard of cleanliness was maintained for the 10 days we were there, and they even bought us a bottle of sparkling wine and a fruit basket a couple of days later.

The quality of the food on offer was consistently high and varied, and even the snacks available in between the normal food times were good.

The staff were a model of efficiency without being overbearing, and the food & beverage waiters were a class above by remembering your name and what you drink! Nothing seemed like too much trouble and the staff were always smiling and genuinely cheerful.

They actually do what they say on the tin in terms of being an eco-friendly place but the quality doesn't suffer as a result.

Having been to purportedly 'better hotels' that cost more money there isn't a thing we would change and can't recommend it highly enough. All in all, believe every positive word you hear, because it's true!
