Twisted Palms Lodge and Restaurant Zanzibar

Twisted Palms Lodge and Restaurant Zanzibar is Quiet and secluded beachfront bungalows with great views, great seafood, and a relaxed atmosphere

Twisted Palms Lodge and Restaurant Zanzibar is a collection of around a dozen bungalow-style rooms about 800m to the north of Bwejuu village amongst the shade of palms; half are right on the beachfront, the others a little way up a low slope, outside the little complex.

Our room was spacious, comprising a double bed (with mosquito net), bedside tables and lamps, and a bathroom with a modern toilet, basin and a semi-wetroom style shower. The linen was clean and changed daily. The shower was hot. We were quite comfortable.

Food and drink at Twisted Palms Lodge and Restaurant Zanzibar is served on a traditionally built covered deck, with a small bar, some occasional chairs, and around 6 tables sitting right over the beach itself.

The seafood - fried or grilled octopus, calamari, crab and locally caught fish - is excellent and often combined with penne or spaghetti (the influence of the management, a friendly couple from Italy, both with backgrounds in the tourism industry).

Beer, wine and spirits are also available. We ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there every day, felt no need to search out alternatives, and we ran a tab all week and settled on leaving. All very laid back.

The sunrise is directly out to sea, and quite breathtaking. A reef, running up most of the east coast about a kilometre off-shore, creates mirror-calm warm and shallow waters in to shore.

The reef itself can be reached by boat, or swum to, and offers some pleasant snorkeling with a moderate variety of corals and small reef fish. Given the shallow slope of the lagoon, low-tide effectively creates a huge paddling pool.

Through our Italian hosts, we hired a motorbike to explore the island, took a spice tour, went dhow-snorkelling and visited the monkeys of the Jozani forest.

Each excursion was a half-day explore and thoroughly recommended. The interior of the island was verdant, and colourful

Twisted Palms is a gem if you have few pretensions, prefer a quieter and more traditional beachfront setting, and hanker after a beautiful view and un-complicated fresh seafood dinners in the pastel twilight of the east coast at sundown.
