On this page we will guide you about Uganda Livestock Production, Animal Husbandry in Uganda, Artificial insemination in Ugandan,Chicken Rearing in Uganda, Boer Goat Rearing in Uganda, Heifers in Uganda, Modern methods of Livestock farming in Uganda and many others.

Uganda’s good climate favours well livestock production and the industry contributes 5.2% and 12.7% to total GDP and agricultural GDP respectively.

The livestock sector is an integral part of the agricultural system in many parts of the country. Livestock is practiced in form of mixed farming, small holders and pastoralism. Cattle are the most important animal specie of all the livestock.

Other animals under Uganda livestock production are goats, sheep and others but relatively on a smaller scale.

Livestock production has continued to grow, at a rate of over 4% per annum, in response to increasing demand for milk and meat in the local and foreign markets.

Higher rates of growth are envisaged as Government pursues its policies of modernizing and commercializing agriculture.

In its plan for Modernization of Agriculture, the Uganda government’s livestock development strategy focuses among other things on:

• Achieving self-sufficiency in meat, milk, poultry and other livestock products

• Promoting and developing industrial linkages for livestock products including dairy, leather and meat processing

• Encouraging the export of livestock and livestock products

• Strengthening research in livestock breeding in order to upgrade the quality and productivity of the present livestock breeds

The above areas are very essential for any investor who wants to venture into livestock because Uganda has enough land, climate and good conditions for livestock investments.

The present livestock production does not satisfy the potential domestic market and regional markets. There is a higher export potential to some of the neighboring countries where endemic diseases hinder the keeping of improved beef and dairy and cattle for meat and milk production.

The private sector in Uganda has continued to invest heavily in the development of the livestock sector.

Investment opportunities in Uganda’s Livestock sector include:

1. Processing meat for local consumption and export

2. Milk for local consumption and export

3. Leather tanning for both local and foreign markets

4. Animal feeds

5. Provision of animal vaccines against diseases like Newcastle, east coast fever, foot and mouth disease etc.

6. Development, research and production.
