Uganda Pentecostal University started operating in 2001 as the Grotius School of Law and Professional Studies based in Mengo, Kampala. The school initially operated as part of another university.

Owing to its distinctive character, in 2004, the school was advised by the National Council for Higher Education to apply for a separate licence or operate as a university or a tertiary institution. The school opted to register as the Uganda Pentecostal University and was licensed on August 9, 2005 by the National Council for Higher Education.
In partnership with the United Pentecostal Churches International of Uganda, the university was opened in Fort Portal in western Uganda. It runs a study centre in Lungujja

Accreditation
In 2007, the Law Council accredited the Law programme of the university which entitles graduates of the university to enroll for the Bar Course at the Law Development Centre.
Infrastructure
The university owns 19 hectares of land within Fort Portal Municipality. Only one third of the land is developed. On this land is also a primary school which the university officials say is a sister institution meant to serve the community around the university.
Accommodation
There are three halls of residence. Each hall can accommodate up to 140 students. A room is shared by two students. Around the university are private hostels which the university authorises and regularly inspects. Accommodation fee is Sh150,000 per semester, which does not include meals. The university does not provide meals. A canteen run on commercial basis provides services to students.
Fees structure
Fees payment is quite convenient. Students are allowed to pay in instalments but all fees have to be cleared before one sits examinations. All students are privately sponsored but the university provides a few scholarships to needy students and high achievers. The scholarships are open to all students on a competitive basis.
Location
The university is found in the heart of Fort Portal town, 1km from the town centre off Bwamba Road in Kahungabunyonyi suburb.
International affiliation/twinning arrangements
The university is linked to Macgeorge School of Law in Sacramento California and to the Heilbronn University in Germany.It has linkages to several institutions through the United Pentecostal Churches International. It also has exchange programmes with universities in Germany.
Library
• Volumes available per programme/on-line journals.
• One main library with a collection of 15,000 volumes covering a variety of disciplines.
• One computer laboratory with 24 computers.
Sports/recreation
The university has facilities for soccer, netball, volley ball, rugby and indoor games.
Avenues of entry
Direct, Mature, Diploma and Special entrance exams for students from other countries that may not follow Uganda’s academic system.
