Uganda Secondary Education

Your Free Guide to Uganda Secondary Education

Uganda Secondary Education is composed of four years and two years of advanced level (A. Level) education before joining a university or any other institution of higher learning.

But one can decide to join an institution after the four years where he/she can take two to three years and be able to upgrade and join a university.

There has been growth of over 20 percent in the number of government-aided secondary schools in Uganda over the last 10 years and a 15% increase in the number of registered private secondary schools the same period.

There are still a big number of primary school leavers but many times they can not join a secondary school because you had to pay school fees after the 7 years of free primary education.

With the introduction of free secondary school education, many students have been enrolled and this has increased the number of students in school compared to those days when secondary education was paid for.

Generally Uganda lack secondary school teachers especially those for science subjects.

When time comes to select the best subject a student should continue with before sitting for his/her final exams, he/she is forced to take arts subjects because of lack of science teachers.

By the time a student joins Advanced level (A. Level) he/she is taking arts hence a vicious cycle of science subjects neglect. How can a teacher who was not taking sciences in his school days teach sciences.

The government has tried its best to encourage students to take science subjects but still the number is still low because of lack of labs at many schools especially those in rural areas.

Not withstanding the above problems, secondary education in Uganda is the best compared to other countries especially in East Africa where there is no A level education like Kenya.

With the coming of the current government, secondary education generally improved though much is still needed to improve the standard as far as international standards of education is concerned right away from primary education, secondary school education, university education and other Tertiary institutions.
