Our uganda Restaurant Guide helps you to choose the right place to eat, suitable to both your taste and budget. uganda has the advantage that you can have good meals at affordable prices. The city has some exclusive restaurants too where you have to dig deeper in your purse.

A bad restaurant experience can ruin your whole visit. Let us give you a helping hand using our local knowledge. Of course we haven't had the chance to test all Ugandan restaurants, but we'll do our best to gather reliable and useful information to help you decide where to eat.

Uganda and Kampala in particular has more than 1,000 restaurants and other eateries. Besides restaurants offering Uganda dishes, you can taste every major world cuisine, as well.

You'll find exotic Ugandan restaurants like: Nandos, Lebanese restaurant, Swahili food fans won't stay hungry either, there are a couple of Swahili restaurant in Kampala like Uhuru Restaurant in downtown Kampala

If you're in a hurry and don't mind eating in a fast food restaurant you have a wide selection to choose from Nandos, Steers and others

The eateries on the different markets like Owino Market offer good alternatives to fast food restaurants. You can have substantial and tasty Ugandan dishes at these places at reasonable price.

Although you can fine dine in Ugandan restaurants at reasonable price, it's good to know in which price category belongs the restaurant you choose to have your meal in.

To help you we indicate the price category (prices are per person for an average three-course meal, without tip) however price may change :

Note that most restaurants in Uganda use only cash.

Most restaurants display their menu including the prices next to the entrance or in the window so you can view it from outside.

To have a delicious meal you won't necessarily have to go to the most expensive Ugandan restaurants. They are mostly very famous places like the Nandos Restaurant and you have to pay for the name as well.

How to Choose a Ugandan Restaurant?

Of course I recommend you trying the Uganda dishes first. The best way to get to know a nation is to taste its traditional dishes. I can assure you that Ugandan cooking is fantastic.

Tipping in Ugandan Restaurants

In restaurants we usually give around a 10% tip to the waiter. When you want to pay for your meal, signal to the waiter. He comes to your table and hands over you the bill.

Review the bill and feel free to tell the waiter if you don't understand something. Usually we don't live the tip on the table, but round up the bill by 10 percent (less or more, depending on your decision).

For example if the bill is 2800, give a waiter 3000.

Selected Kampala Eatries

This list includes some of the "must visit" places. These established restaurants usually have long time traditions, fine cuisine and service and their name ring a bell in foreign countries too.

Needless to say that prices are usually high, though they offer discount for certain occasions (e.g. sunday brunch).Try a meal at these places if you don't mind digging deeper in your purse and if you want to impress your friends and relatives at home telling them about your culinary experiences in Kampala.

Otherwise uganda has some less pretentious and pricy restaurants with the same level of quality dishes and service. Kampala has a surprising variety of international eateries at much more affordable prices than bigger, more tourist African capitals like Nairobi.

Ekitobero Bar and Restaurant

Location: Nakasero Road, Opposite Nigerian High Commission.

Accessibility:

You can access the restaurant along Nakasero road from Wandegeya at YMCA or branch off on the Public Service. There is parking space within and outside the restaurant, for approximately 60 cars.

Attractions:

After changing location from Yusuf Lule road, Ekitobeero Bar &Restaurant has a new look to it. It is more spacious. The gardens are dotted with seats for revellers who prefer to enjoy their time outside.

Otherwise, the facilities extend to the interior at the double-storied establishment that celebrates its eleventh anniversary on 7th February.

Ekitobeero is synonymous with luwombo and here you'll get it in all kinds, from chicken, goat, beef and ground nut with mushroom or dry fish. You'll also get freshly cut fish. That will do for lunch or dinner.

However for an evening out, there is seasoned muchomo and coffee or tea. There is a vibrant bar with an array of drinks. Football games are screened in all rooms, gardens and at the bar area which also has a pool table.

Ambience:

It is relaxing. It is different on Saturday evenings when Simba live band plays from 7p.m through to midnight. For the rest of the days, there is piped music playing at every corner of the restaurant.

Crowd:

It is a mixed crowd. You'll catch everyone from senior citizens, to upcoming corporates and the business man or woman around town. The place has also hosted royals.

Haandi Restaurant

It seems like yesterday, when they embarked upon their next venture in Kampala. Actually, it was in 1996 and they have never looked back. If success can be judged by the SRO Crowds which park there every evening, then they must be doing something right.

Getting back to Kampala, ever since a Haandi made its mark in this neck of the woods, one area in which they have excelled consistently has been in quality and service.

While many diners had I become accustomed to their former location, am the first to acknowledge that Commercial Plaza on Kampala Road in Kampala is by far a more prestigious and modern building.

Besides the traffic congestion, over yonder in the evening was always a permanent problem.

Today, Haandi's new home is on the second floor of Commercial Plaza with ample secure parking and occupies an entire floor.

The interior decor has been done up in wonderful understated elegance and style. No doubt, this goes along way towards enhancing the ambience. The dining arrangement overlooking Kampala Road is an ideal setting for lovers.

Each table seats two, which is just right. As for the main dining room, it is big and not overcrowded. There is also a private room that can take up to 40 or 50 people.

For those who hanker for the tandoori cooked meats and vegetables, the good news is that have one; so that should not be a problem. Of course you can still have the chicken tikka, chicken makhini, rogan josh mutton, chilly paneer and so on.

We are impressed with smooth transition from old to new.

The general manager Alok Badoni, besides being a man of wide experience, is a very energetic, doting and charming man and gets the job done.

It speaks volumes of the man's management style that his staff remains more or less the same since the inception of Haandi in Uganda. Working with a staff of 35 is never easy.

We can say without any doubt, that Haandi is here to stay and is a tough act to follow.

The Chinese Restaurant

China Palace was one of the first Chinese restaurants in town. It's been around since 1992 in the NIC building. China Palace boasts a huge dining room that can seat well over 110 diners in relative comfort.

On the right as you come up the stairs is a private dining room that can seat almost 20 people. The main attraction of China Palace is the pond in the middle of the dining room, which is filled with fish and water tortoises. Equally filled is the menu - almost 112 items to choose from.

With 112 items, were you spoilt for choice?

Almost, but before we go down that road, let me give you an idea of what they have to offer: Starters range between sh1,500-sh5,000 for fried chicken wings, fried wantan and prawn crackers, to name some.

Soups go between sh1,500 and sh10,000 for say noodle soup, corn soup and bean curd soup, while all dumplings are priced at sh5,500.

Kung-Bo chicken costs sh5,500, as with most of the dishes with the exception of diced chicken with cashew nuts which goes at sh6,000. Duck dishes start at sh7,000 for the shredded duck with bamboo shoots rising up to sh26,000 for roasted Beijing duck.

Pork with mushroom, sweet and sour, in soya bean paste all go for sh5,500 as do all the lamb and beef dishes. Rice dishes range between sh1,800 and sh3,500, while noodles go from sh3,500 to sh4,500.

Golden Fish Restaurant

What do you mean you and your guest were the sole diners?

We'll get to that later on. Golden Fish Chinese restaurant for those of you who don't know, is located in Bugolobi, almost next door to Bamboo Nest.

Looking up at it from the road side, there appears nothing much to the place, and when you walk in, this impression is confirmed. There is a small car park court that can fit about fifteen or so cars.

Do go on, I am listening.

Up the first flight of stairs are the toilets (which are clean I must say), and on the second flight is the restaurant itself. Diners have the option of sitting out on the balcony or in the dining area,

Where did you opt to sit?

We headed for the balcony first, but as the heavens opened up we were getting soaked so we moved inside, and that is when we discovered we were the sole diners during our entire stint there. It was rather freaky - does it say something about the food, I wondered?

In comparison to the other Chinese restaurants in town, how does Golden Fish compare?

Golden Fish ranks down on the lower half of the scale, and their menu is not comparable or as extensive as the other Chinese restaurants in town. Let me quickly run through the menu for you. Appetizers start at sh1,500 up to sh7,500 for the Golden Fried Prawns.

Soups, say Hot and Sour, Won Tun or the Mixed Seafood for example, are priced between sh2,500 - sh3,000.

Chicken dishes are priced between sh6,500 - sh8,500 for, say Diced Chicken with Green Chilli for example. Of course there is the usual Beef, Duck Seafood and rice dish which, due to space constraints, I won't go into. To summarise, the average price for lunch or dinner for two without Appetisers and soft drinks is around sh23,000.
