Wildlife and Birdlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda

There is much wildlife and birdlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park than any other national park in Uganda.

Elephants are plentiful especially along the Channel Track when they come to water during the dry season. Large breeding herds are commonly seen.

The Kasenyi sector is regarded as the best place to observe lions. Uganda Kob are plentiful here on the grass plains.

Around Mweya there is a large concentration of buffalo and hippos are numerous. The rare Giant Forest Hog can also be seen during the day close to the old airstrip.

Leopard sightings are not uncommon. Buffalo, Wart Hog , Hippo and Defassa Waterbuck are just about resident in the Mweya campsite.


Wildlife in Ishasha Sector

Great herds of buffalo are common in Ishasha as are Uganda Kob. The star attraction is a pride of tree climbing Lions that are regularly seen.

Less often seen are elephant that cross from the adjacent Parc National des Virunga in the DR. Congo at night and return at first light in the morning.

Hippos frequent the Ishasha River with Lake Edward hosting the largest hippo population in the world.

Waterbuck, bushbuck and topi are other large ungulates seen.


Bird Life

Queen Elizabeth National Park is a world biosphere reserve for humanity (UNESCO, 1979) and the site is classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International.

QENP has 568 of Uganda's 1017 species of birds (over a quarter of Africa's bird species), which is more than any other park in Africa!


Queen Elizabeth National Park has the largest recorded number of bird species (568) of all Uganda's national parks. Years of research in the park have contributed to a substantial bird list which can be observed at the Bird Observatory located in Mweya.


Queen Elizabeth National Park is an important wintering and stopover site for a great number of European migrant species whose numbers can exceed millions at pre-migration build-up times.
