How to Get to and from Entebbe town in Uganda

A direct paved road connects Entebbe with Kampala. There are matatus leaving both the Old and New Taxi Parks every 5 minutes to Entebbe. A shared taxi fare is Ushs2,000- from Kampala to Entebbe or vice versa. If self driving the journey time is 30 minutes from the top 'round-about' when leaving Kampala. Getting into and out of Kampala in rush hour can add another 30 minutes to all journey times.

Uganda Entebbe Airport Information :

From Entebbe International Airport, the big hotels and all the guest houses offer courtesy shuttle buses for arriving passengers. A taxi to anywhere in Entebbe should not be more than US$10-. You can pay as little as Ushs15,000- if you know where your going and have local currency to hand.

Getting to the airport terminal from Entebbe (3 kms) is done cheapest by motor-bike taxi (boda-boda). This should not cost more than Ushs1,000-. A taxi from in front of the Flight Motel will cost closer to Ushs5,000-. The Airport vehicle entrance fee is Ushs1,000-, motorbikes are free.

A daily ferry service to and from Kalangala started operation February 18th 2006. The Uganda Government Ferry MV Kalangala departs the landing site at Entebbe / Nakiwogo 2 km from Entebbe town and close to the International Airport.

Uganda Wildlife Education Center:

Sometimes known as the zoo or UWEC pronounced 'uwic'. Well signposted off the main Entebbe-Kampala Rd. Well worth a visit not only to see the Shoebill Stork wetland enclosure, but also the fantastic work done to provide new holding enclosures for the Lion and the newly acquired White Rhino's.

The entrance is located close to the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel. Colobus monkeys are common sightings in the grounds. The gardens are an opportunity for birding enthusiasts to open their birding account for Uganda or merely to add to an existing list. Palm Nut Vulture and African Grey Parrot are resident, whilst Bat Hawk is often seen over the gardens at sunset and is best observed from the Botanical Beach Hotel patio bar. Naturally there are numerous species of exotic plants and trees.

The gardens are open 7 days a week from 09.00am.

The government mapping office is located in Entebbe close to the Post Office. Many maps are out of stock or only available as b&w photocopies. Digital maps are available in various formats. You will need a blank CD-R for the mapping services to prepare content for you. Map prices are subjective as is what they have available in digital formats.

Swimming :

Both the Imperial Resort Beach and Lake Windsor Victoria Hotel have pay to swim pools from Ushs5,000- per person respectively.

Foreign Exchange:

The best rates you can get in Entebbe are usually at the airport. This rate is around Ushs50- less than the rate you can get in Kampala. The Lake Windsor Victoria hotel has a foreign exchange desk as are there several banks in Entebbe town that change US$ cash. Rates for traveler's cheques will be better in Kampala.

Communications:

Entebbe town now has two Internet cafes, Entebbe Cyberlink located on the main road in Entebbe town is close to the Chinese restaurant. Cyberlink is open from 08.00 through till 21.30 hours. Connections are generally acceptable. Surf time @Ushs25- per minute. Surfing Corner located some 100 meters from Cyberlink and opposite Standard Bank is the alternative. Surfing also @Ushs25- per minute. Open from 08.00 to 22.00 daily. Both cafes have loyalty programs, so if your going to be around for sometime in Entebbe or will be online for more than an hour check before surfing.

In the suburb of Kitoro the Telematics Internet cafe is located conveniently in the main taxi park. Surfing also for Ushs25- per minute.You can buy phone cards for Uganda Telecom public phones next to the Post Office in the UTC building The Post Office has 2 International direct dial phones. MTN phone cards are available in kiosks and small groceries for use in MTN Publicom phone booths.

China Garden Chinese Restaurant along Kampala Highway in Entebbe Town in Uganda:

This restaurant relocated in 2007 to the corner plot on the junction of the main Entebbe - Kampala road that leads to the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel. This is not your cheapest choice to eat but stays open late and offers very good food clean pleasant surroundings.

Club Knight Rider:

A full programme of disco entertainment from 8pm till dawn. Experience 'Ladies night' on Wednesdays and series of other regular events throughout the week. Watch live Premiere League football during the day on Saturdays and Sundays or just pop in for a game of pool.

Entebbe Flight Motel

A large good value menu with typical Ugandan dishes also. Excellent choice for the buffet lunch menu.

Four Turkeys Pub:

Almost next door to the Chinese restaurant. Good atmosphere and a great bar menu at very reasonable prices. Probably the best pub grub in Uganda and now under new management March 2007.

The Golf Nest Restaurant:

Adjacent to the Entebbe Club at the Golf Course. Has a well patronised restaurant set in pleasant surroundings. A good stopover when en-route to the airport or if a game of golf takes your fancy. The Entebbe Golf clubs welcomes day members.In the Kitoro suburb of Entebbe you can find countless informal places to eat. There are many pubs where you can order roasted chicken or meat sticks cooked on BBQ's in the road. Try 'Masaka Boys' if you like roast pork meat sticks.

Mechanical Emergencies:

The large commercial garages of Shell, Total, Agip, Caltex plus others are all modern and have pit facilities to enable minor servicing. Gas and arc welding facilities you will find in Kitoro. There are several workshops that can deal with major mechanical problems where there would not be a problem in you assisting in the repairs. Spare parts are best sourced from Kampala where they are much cheaper.

Medical Emergencies:

In Kitoro there are several small clinics where you can obtain anti-biotics etc. There is also a lab where malaria slides can be examined. The Victoria Medical Centre Plot 24 Gowers Road is open 24 hours and located behind the Lake Windsor Victoria Hotel. A hospital is located in Entebbe town providing basic health care. For serious sickness there are ex-patriate doctors practising in Kampala. Consider also contacting the International Medical Centre Kampala Tel. 041 341291.

KITORO:

In this Entebbe suburb you can find a good daily fresh produce market. The Upland Supermarket is well stocked where you will find frozen meat products as well as dairy produce. Every tuesday there is the weekly market that engulf's Kitoro totally and is almost deserving of being a tourist attraction in it's own right.
