With over 80% of Uganda’s population living in rural areas, there is need for joint efforts from various stakeholders to empower these communities. That is why Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) opened her doors to community service in 1989.
Location of Uganda Mbarara University
MUST is located within Mbarara municipality, along Kabale highway, 286 kilometres, south west of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
Faculties/ Institutes
The University has three faculties of Medicine, Development Studies and Science. It has two institutes; the Institute of Computer Science and the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC). ITFC is based in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park; It serves as an education and research centre in tropical forest-biology and conservation.

The University has over 200 teaching staff with qualifications at masters and doctoral level.
Recreational facilities
Out side speakers, workshops, sporting events are just some of the varied range of social and recreational activities which enrich the experience of students at MUST. Peer projects like the Peer Project (MPP) supported by Lund and Mbarara University provide students with counselling services and information on reproductive health and sexually transmitted diseases.
Accreditation to Universities/collaborations
Mulago-Mbarara Joint Aids Project (MJAP): The Mulago National Referral and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospitals through collaboration are fostering government efforts in fighting the HIV pandemic. Through this project, hundreds of people have benefited from the improved management and care of HIV/AIDS services through providing free routine counselling and testing (RCT) services to all patients in the teaching hospital and surrounding health centres.
Epicentre
The EPICENTRE, based at Mbarara University is one of the biggest research centres in Uganda. It is a scientific branch of the global organisation, Medicines San Frontiers (Doctors without borders). The centre is currently conducting research on Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Meningitis.
Uganda Mbarara University Child Project
Healthy Child Uganda is a community-based child health project, locally known as “Omwaana N’Amagara Marungi”, a partnership between MUST and various Canadian organisations, including the Canadian Paediatric Society, the University of Calgary and Dalhousie University. The project was born to combat the unacceptably high under five child mortality rates in the region.
Millennium Science Initiative (MSI):
MUST-University of California Berkeley Collaboration.This is a health initiative study currently being conducted in Nakaseke District. The study aims at improving quality of health care delivery in the district.
This project is exploring the usability and potential adoption of the smart phone (a kind of mobile phone) in rural health care settings by improving communication. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to integrate mobile phone technology into the rural health system in Nakaseke District.
Uganda Mbarara University Community-based programmes
Students are specifically trained to work well with rural communities. MUST is a pioneer of Community-Based Medical Education (CBME) in Uganda. Medical students spend at least five weeks on community health rotation at health centres to get acquainted with the rural conditions. The University attaches students for community placements in the districts of Mbarara, Ibanda, Kasese, Sembabule, Bushenyi and Kisoro.
The Faculty of Science continues to provide for the high demand for qualified science teachers and laboratory technicians for schools in the rural areas. The Faculty of Development Studies is also spearheading Community Peace Programs in collaboration with the University of Western Cape, to work with surrounding communities on issues relating to Conflict Prevention and Peace Building.
While the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) based in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park continuous to contribute to national development through increased sustainable ecotourism and nature conservation.

The University
Mbarara University of Science and Technology is administered by three bodies; the University Council, University Senate and Top management.
University Council
The University Council is the supreme organ of the university responsible for the overall administration and ensuring that the establishment objectives and functions of the university are duly implemented. The Council members are drawn from stakeholders including university staff, students, and members from the Line Ministry, Collaborating Ministries, Local Government, Convocation, Private Sector and the general public.
University Senate
The University Senate is responsible for overall administration, of all academic programmes. The current Senate is is instituted in accordance with the provisions of the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001.
Top Management
The Top management consists of the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University Secretary, Academic Registrar, Dean of Students, and the Director of Mbarara Hospital. The Deputy Secretary is the Minutes Secretary for Top Management Committee.
